The El Segundo Police Department offers free vacation security checks, where trained volunteers conduct extra patrols of your residence during your absence.

To request a vacation security check, call our non-emergency dispatch center at 310-524-2760 or submit an online request at least one day before your departure. Be prepared to provide:

• Your address and travel dates
• House-sitter or emergency contact information (if applicable)
• Details on any vehicles that will be parked in the driveway
• Your contact information while away

A few simple precautions can help protect your home and make your vacation more enjoyable. Let us help keep an extra eye on your property while you're away.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
Motor vehicle thefts saw a slight increase in May compared to April. While no particular make or model stood out as a frequent target, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) made up a larger share of the vehicles reported stolen.

The good news is that a few simple habits can help reduce your chances of becoming a victim:

• Lock your vehicle and make sure all windows are closed.
• Don't leave valuables inside, especially items like garage door openers, spare keys, wallets, or important documents.
• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
• If you have a choice, choose parking areas with visible, working security cameras.
• Use theft-deterrent devices such as alarms, steering wheel locks, or vehicle tracking systems if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Taking a moment to secure your vehicle before walking away can make a big difference. A little prevention goes a long way in helping keep your vehicle and belongings safe.

The next stop is often the internet, but that’s exactly where scammers are waiting.

Cybercriminals closely follow shopping trends and frequently create fake websites, advertisements, and online stores that appear legitimate. If a deal seems unusually cheap, offers deep discounts, or creates a sense of urgency with messages like “limited supply” or “buy now,” take a moment to verify before making a purchase.

Before Entering Your Payment Information:

• Verify that the website address (URL) is legitimate and matches the retailer’s official site.
• Be cautious of unfamiliar websites advertising popular or hard-to-find products.
• Use a trusted website-checking tool to evaluate suspicious links before visiting them. 
• Avoid clicking links in unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media posts.
• When possible, navigate directly to a retailer’s website rather than following a link.

If You’ve Already Submitted Payment Information:

• Contact your bank or credit card provider immediately to report potential fraud.
