MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
In March, motor vehicle thefts continued to rank among the most frequently reported property crimes. There was no single make or model targeted, highlighting that all vehicles remain at risk.

Stay vigilant and take precautions to protect your vehicle: lock doors, park in well-lit areas, and avoid leaving valuables inside.

FRAUD ALERT | CHECK WASHING
As the tax filing deadline approaches, more people are mailing checks, and scammers are taking advantage of the increased activity.

One growing fraud tactic is known as check washing. Criminals steal checks from the mail and use chemicals to remove the ink, leaving a blank check with your signature still intact. They then rewrite the check for a higher amount or make it payable to a different person before cashing it or using a third party to do so.

Because the original signature remains, altered checks can appear legitimate to banks and mobile deposit systems.

Protect Yourself:

  • Use pens with permanent, gel-based ink
  • Consider switching to secure digital payment options when possible
  • Monitor your bank account regularly for unauthorized activity
  • Avoid mailing checks from unsecured mailboxes, especially during tax season
