Nature Walk and Poetry Workshop

Please join us for a poetry-in-nature program featuring a collaboration with Poet Laureate Kweku Abimbola and the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy. The Land Remembers: El Segundo Blue Butterfly Poetry Walk on Saturday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m., meets at the 600 block of West Imperial, between Loma Vista and Hillcrest. This FREE event is open to all ages.

Abimbola and Master Gardener Barbara Boland will lead participants on a short walk through Memory Tree Row. Participants will observe nature, consider it a source of inspiration for creative work while learning about the environmental restoration efforts of the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy group.

Abimbola will then lead participants through a brief journal exercise, dialog, and poetry writing inspired by their observations of nature around them.

Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook, pens or pencils, a towel, beach blanket, or beach chair to sit on, along with a light snack and bottled water. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking. Writing experience is not necessary.

The Poet Laureate Program is a City initiative funded by El Segundo's Cultural Development Fund. The poet laureate was selected by a committee representing members from the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and the Cultural Arts Coordinator. The program seeks to promote diverse voices and perspectives in shaping and furthering the literary arts, culture, and creative expression. Abimbola’s term as poet laureate is two years through the end of 2026.
