NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH | KEEPING YOUR WATCH STRONG
It’s always good news when crime goes down, but that's often when Neighborhood Watch groups lose momentum.

Keeping your group engaged doesn't have to be complicated. A quick coffee meet-up, a holiday safety meeting, or hosting a small get-together with neighbors can keep your Watch group active and connected.

Let's connect before the holiday season. Contact Crime Prevention Analyst Sirena Boskovich at 310-524-2274 or sboskovich@elsegundo.org to schedule a meeting.

Crime Trends

VEHICLE THEFT | IS YOUR VEHICLE PROTECTED?
Vehicle thefts increased in the month of August and remained one of the most commonly reported property crimes.

Among the most frequently targeted were certain Kia and Hyundai models, particularly those manufactured between 2011 and 2022. These vehicles are often singled out due to the lack of electronic immobilizers and the widespread sharing of theft techniques promoted on social media over the past few years.

If you own a Kia or Hyundai, especially one of the older models, now is a good time to check with the manufacturer for any available software updates.

  • KIA is requesting owners visit customercare.kiausa.com and select Kia Anti-theft. From there you will be prompted to input your 17-digit VIN to receive information on your vehicle’s eligibility for the enhanced security software upgrade.
  • Kia contact: 1-800-333-4542, Option 2 (Kia Customer Care Services), then Option 1 (Kia Vehicle Theft).
  • Kia continues to provide free steering wheel locks directly to affected owners and lessees.
  • HYUNDAI is requesting owners visit hyundaiantitheft.com and select Check Your VIN. From there you will be prompted to enter their 17-digit VIN to validate eligibility for the Anti-Theft Software Upgrade.
  • Hyundai Contact: 1-888-498-0390

TIP: Staying informed and taking a few precautions can go a long way in preventing vehicle theft.

Crime Prevention Awareness

DRIVE A WORK TRUCK? | SECURE YOUR TOOLS, PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS
Your work truck isn't just for getting from point A to B, it's your mobile workshop. Unfortunately, thieves see it the same way. Open truck beds make landscaping and power tools easy targets, while unlocked tool cabinets provide quick access to expensive equipment.

Help protect your tools and your livelihood with these simple steps:

  • Park with purpose: Choose spots with visible security cameras or high foot traffic.
  • Upgrade your defenses: Use heavy-duty locks on doors, windows, tailgates, and tool compartments.
  • Always lock up: Even if you're just stepping away for a minute.
  • Etch your equipment: Mark tools with your name, logo, or ID number to help deter theft and assist recovery.
  • Keep an inventory: Maintain a list of your tools (with serial numbers and photos) in the event you are a victim.
