Save the Date: Saturday, May 10 Super CPR Saturday & ESFD Open House!
Join us for the El Segundo Fire Department's Super CPR Saturday on May 10! This free event is open to everyone and provides a comprehensive course in Adult CPR. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time learner, this class is designed for all age groups, as long as your child can grasp the material.
You'll receive expert instruction through a mix of dynamic lectures, informative videos, and hands-on CPR practice. Plus, everyone who completes the course will earn a two-year adult CPR certification from the American Red Cross—a valuable skill that can help save lives.
There are two class times, 7:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Also on Saturday May 1 is ESFD's Fire Station 1 Open House from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.! Open House is a day when we open up the doors of our fire station to the public and invite the community to come and see what we do! Get a tour of our fire station and check out the fire engines and trucks up close, along with music, food and activities for kids. We can't wait!

GAME ON: South Bay Police vs. Fire Charity Hockey Game
The El Segundo Fire & Police Departments are hosting a South Bay Police vs. Fire charity hockey game on Saturday, April 26 at 5:00 p.m.
This is a great event for all ages and for a great cause! Bring your family and friends to cheer on our public safety team members and the rest of the South Bay Blueliners! There will be raffles and giveaways and a portion of the proceeds goes to the El Segundo Unified School District's PTA.

Waterwise Lawn & Garden Workshop
Come learn how to remove your lawn and make the right moves for creating a gorgeous, watershed-wise landscape in this informative workshop on Friday, April 18 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the El Segundo Public Library.
Topics that will be covered:
- Removing turf without the use of chemicals
- Replacing it with climate-appropriate plants
- Maintaining existing lawns organically
- Learning how to apply for rebates
- Managing the big three - weeds, pests, and disease.

Meet the New Poet Laureate & Join the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Poetry Walk
Please join us in welcoming Kweku Abimbola to El Segundo as the City's second poet laureate!
Born in the Gambia, Abimbola earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in poetry from the University of Michigan's Helen Zell Writer's Program. He is of Gambian, Ghanaian, Nigerian, and Sierra Leonean descent.
Abimbola's first full-length poetry collection, Saltwater Demands a Psalm, was published by Graywolf Press in 2023. The debut collection was selected by Tyehimba Jess to receive the Academy of American Poets First Book Award.
The Poet Laureate Program is a City initiative funded by El Segundo's Cultural Development Fund. The poet laureate was selected by a committee representing members from the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee and the Cultural Arts Coordinator. The program seeks to promote diverse voices and perspectives in shaping and furthering the literary arts, culture, and creative expression.

And please join us for Abimbola's inaugural program in collaboration with the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy: The Land Remembers: El Segundo Blue Butterfly Poetry Walk on Saturday, April 19, at 10:00 a.m. It will meet at the 600 block of West Imperial, between Loma Vista and Hillcrest. This FREE event is open to all ages.
Poet Laureate Abimbola and Master Gardener Barbara Boland will lead participants on a short walk through Memory Tree Row. Participants will observe nature while considering it a source of inspiration for creative work while getting to see and hear about the environmental restoration efforts of the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Conservancy group. Elderfest 2025 – Nominations Open
May is Older Americans Month, a perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for the older adults in our community. The theme for Older Americans Month 2025 is "Flip the Script on Aging" which focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging.
Every year, the El Segundo Recreation, Parks, and Library Department seeks nominations for the "El Segundo Older American of the Year." A selection committee determines the winner and they will be honored at the annual Elderfest Celebration in El Segundo in May.
Nominations are open and forms are due by Friday, April 18th at 5:00pm. Nomination forms can be found at the Joslyn Center, or please click here.
This year's Elderfest will be held on Saturday, May 17 at the Joslyn Center. All older Americans in the community are invited to attend the event to help celebrate the "El Segundo Older American of the Year" and enjoy a free lunch. Egg Hunt & Summer Camp Expo
Hop over on Saturday, April 19 to Recreation Park for the Egg Hunt Eggstravaganza and Camp Expo from 9:30 a.m.– 11:30 a.m. There will be multiple egg hunts with toy and candy filled eggs and a “meet and greet” with the Easter bunny at 9:30 a.m. The Summer Camp Expo will also offer fun activities with our fun, energetic camp counselors and instructors!

Underwater Eggstravganza
After the Egg Hunt, head on over and hop into the Underwater Eggstravaganza at the El Segundo Wiseburn Aquatics Center from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Free Mulch, Paper Shredding & E-Waste Event Saturday, April 19, 2025
The City of El Segundo and EDCO are sponsoring a FREE paper shredding, e-waste collection, and mulch distribution event on Saturday, April 19 from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the El Segundo Maintenance Facility, 150 Illinois St. There will be certified shredding trucks and all items will be shredded ONSITE. Unwanted electronics will also be collected including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, etc. However, no household hazardous waste (HHW) material will be accepted. Free mulch for residents will also be available, while supplies last. This event is for El Segundo residents only. For more information, please click here.

Summer Camp Registration is Open!
The Recreation, Parks, and Library Department's Summer Camps are available for kids and teens of all ages. These weekly camps feature a variety of activities , including games, crafts, sports and weekly field trips!

Celebrate National Library Week with An Author Tea!
In celebration of National Library Week, the El Segundo Public Library invites the community to an author tea meet & greet on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. with New York Times and national best-selling author J. Ryan Stradal as he discusses his books and answers questions. Tea, coffee and treats will be served and books will be available for purchase and signing.

Hometown Fair & Carnival – Saturday, May 3
On Saturday, May 3, the Hometown Fair & Carnival will be happening from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Library Park and the 600 block of N. Main Street. Festivities include music and entertainment from local talent, carnival rides, and a community expo.
Wristbands will go on presale at the Clubhouse in Recreation Park on April 7. The wristbands give access to the rides and games offered throughout the fair and carnival. Avoid the line and buy early! For more details and information, call 310-524-2700, or click here.

Recreation Program Scholarships
Did you know that El Segundo residents can receive up to $200 per person and $600 per household annually to participate in recreation programs through the Recreation Program Scholarship!
The scholarships help make sports, arts, fitness, and other activities more accessible for our community. Eligibility is based on household size & income, and applications are accepted year-round with scholarships awarded four times per year.

Run for Education
On April 26 at 8:00 a.m.., the 33rd Annual El Segundo PTA Run for Education 5K, 10K, and Kids Fun Runs takes over the City’s downtown area and residential neighborhood!
This major fundraiser for El Segundo's K-12 public schools is also one of Southern California's unique USATF-certified 5K/10K courses.

58th Annual Mayor's Good Friday Breakfast 2025
Presented by the El Segundo Rotary Club, join El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel and featured speaker Danny Boehle to hear from Danny how the World Series for the El Segundo Little League Baseball Team was a culmination of investing into his family and community.

Upcoming Biogas Flaring/Hyperion Update
The Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP) will perform preventive maintenance work at the Bioenergy Facility starting on Saturday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m., which is anticipated to continue through Saturday, April 12.
During this timeframe, ongoing maintenance activities will require the Bioenergy Facility to be offline.
During this planned outage, the biogas will be combusted by a standby boiler for the digester heating, and the remaining biogas will be flared.
Hyperion is taking all necessary precautions to minimize any potential impacts to the surrounding community. It is not expected that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or any odors will be emitted during this procedure. Below are the most recent updates to City Council and the community on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, which is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles:
- City Efforts
- City staff are working on updated framework per Hyperion’s request that can be effectuated into an MOU prior to the onset of the on-site meetings. These have yet to be rescheduled.
- SCAQMD abatement hearing is currently scheduled for August 4, 2025. Staff has drafted a letter and plans to attend in person.
- AQMD - Over the past two weeks, SCAQMD received approximately 32 odor complaints. The facility was issued two Notices of Violation on March 7 and March 10 for public nuisance related to odors.
- HYPERION - The Hyperion community survey by Heal the Bay closed on March 14. The closing date was emailed out by Hyperion News and the survey was linked on the City website.

Aquatics Center Closure
The El Segundo Wiseburn Aquatics Center pool will be closed from July 1 through August 31, 2025 for necessary maintenance and repairs, including the replacement of the pool heater. The anticipated reopening is September 1, 2025. The City understands this closure may disrupt swim routines, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. These repairs are essential to improve pool operations and ensure a better experience moving forward.
