Alert SouthBay
Alert SouthBay is a mass notification service that allows the City to alert you about local emergencies, such as street closures due to police activity or traffic accidents. You opt-in by entering your contact information and subscribing to receive notifications based on your location. The information you provide is protected and will not be used for any other purpose. When we issue a notification about a potential safety hazard or concern, you will receive a message on the voice or text communication methods that you have registered.

Thirteen South Bay cities have established an alert and warning notification system as part of an integrated, interoperable regional platform. The Alert SouthBay emergency notification system aims to keep communities informed about disasters and major emergencies via SMS (text), email, phone, landline, as well as other means of communication.  The notification system gives the Police, Fire, Emergency Management, and specific contract cities, the ability to deliver critical notifications to our community.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
There has been an increase in vehicle and motorcycle thefts with Hyundai reportedly being the most commonly stolen vehicle make.

Do you own a 2011-2022 Hyundai? Do you know if you have the latest theft deterrent device installed on your vehicle?

Hyundai is requesting owners visit hyundaiantitheft.com and select Check Your Vin. From there you will be prompted to enter your 17-digit VIN to validate eligibility for the Anti-Theft Software Upgrade.

However, every vehicle is a potential target for theft. The El Segundo Police Department recommends a layered approach to protection. The more layers of protection on your vehicle, the more difficult it is to steal.

LAYER 1: The common sense approach is the simplest and most cost-effective way to thwart would-be thieves. For example, always lock your car and remove valuables.
LAYER 2: Use a viable or audible device which alerts thieves that your vehicle is protected.
LAYER 3: Use a device which prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated.
LAYER 4: The use of an electronic tracking device which emits a signal to the police or monitoring station when the vehicle is stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles.

TAX SEASON | BEWARE OF SCAMMERS POSING AS THE IRS

Identity thieves may try to contact taxpayers through phone calls, emails, texts and social media messages. While an IRS agent may call to confirm an appointment or discuss items, the IRS will mail a letter or notice before calling or emailing.

Be vigilant for the following warning signs of a scam:

  • Spelling errors or incorrect grammar.
  • A link or attachment with a slightly misspelled URL or an unusual one such as irs.com. All IRS links go to irs.gov
  • A threatening or urgent request to pay now, to follow a link or to open an attachment.

SCAM ALERT! The IRS does not leave pre-recorded, urgent or threatening messages. Scammers will often tell victims that if they do not call back, a warrant will be issued for their arrest. These calls are a scam.

For additional information or to authenticate a request from the IRS contact IRS customer service.
