EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – (July 31, 2024) – The City of El Segundo is proud to announce the certification of its 2021-2029 Housing Element by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) earlier this month. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the City’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable growth and enhancing housing opportunities for all economic segments, while preserving the community’s small-town character. Mayor Drew Boyles expressed his enthusiasm for the certification, stating, “The Housing Element is a vital component of El Segundo’s General Plan, outlining the strategies and policies that will guide the City’s housing development over the next eight years, while maintaining our vibrant and tight-knit community.”
Originally submitted to HCD in October 2021, the 2021-2029 Housing Element completed the State of California’s certification process just this month. The Housing Element Strategic Plan includes comprehensive measures to increase opportunities to develop safe and affordable housing units for residents of all income levels. The plan introduces zoning regulations to accommodate a variety of housing types, including mixed-use developments and accessory dwelling units (ADUs) while emphasizing environmentally sustainable building practices and the promotion of energy-efficient housing solutions. Additionally, the Housing Element integrates supportive services and resources for vulnerable populations, including seniors, low-income families, and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Extensive community input was gathered to ensure that the Housing Element reflects the needs and aspirations of El Segundo’s residents. "The Housing Element addresses critical issues such as housing needs, land use planning, resource allocation, and regulatory measures, all aimed at creating a diverse and inclusive community,” shared Councilmember Ryan Baldino. “We are excited about the future and grateful for the community’s support and collaboration in shaping the residential vision of El Segundo.”
The City extends its gratitude to all community members, stakeholders, and staff who contributed to the development of the Housing Element over the past three years. Their collaboration and input were instrumental in shaping a comprehensive plan that meets the diverse needs of the El Segundo community.
