YOU HOLD THE KEY July is vehicle theft prevention month. Regardless of the year, make or model, every vehicle is a potential target for theft. We recommend a layered approach to protection. The more layers of protection on your vehicle, the more difficult it is to steal.
Layer 1 The common sense approach to protection is the simplest and most cost-effective way to thwart would-be thieves. No cost precautions include: Always lock your car and close your windows. Remove your keys from your vehicle and never leave the vehicle running unattended.
Layer 2 The second layer of protection is a viable or audible device which alerts thieves that your vehicle is protected. Popular second layer devices include: Alarm systems. Steering wheel locks, tire and wheel locks.
Layer 3 The third layer of protection is a device which prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot wiring the vehicle. Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated. Popular third layer devices include: Starter, ignition and fuel kill switches. Smart keys.
Layer 4 The final layer of protection is an electronic tracking device which emits a signal to police or monitoring station when the vehicle is stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles.

DISTRACTION THEFT | YOUR TIRE PRESSURE IS LOW You have just finished shopping and as you get ready to back out, a stranger approaches your vehicle window and points out that your tire pressure is low, what should you do?
-
Be selective: Only roll your driver's side window down enough to have a conversation. If you do exit your vehicle to speak with someone, lock and close the doors behind you.
-
Be alert: Be aware of your surroundings and your valuables. If you are suspicious of a good Samaritan offering help, protect your personal belongings and notify the police department that you think you're being scammed.
Remember, the scammers work in pairs or groups. They will use a variety of techniques to catch their victims off guard. Often, one of the scammers will pretend to be a good Samaritan and distract the victim, while the second person steals items such as jewelry, a wallet or other valuables from the car.
