 Hometown Fair & Carnival – Saturday, May 4th
On Saturday, May 4th, the Hometown Fair & Carnival will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. spanning from Library Park to the 600 Block of N. Main Street.
Festivities for this event include music and entertainment from local talent, carnival rides, and a community booth expo. El Segundo High School groups are coordinating game booths in efforts to fundraise for their clubs. A variety of vendors will be selling one-of-a-kind handmade crafts, while the El Segundo Police Department, Fire Department and El Segundo Non-Profit groups will participate in the event to provide information about their organizations and programs.
The Bake-Off event will award prizes to winners in the categories of Petite Desserts & Cookies, Bread & Rolls, and Muffins, Cakes & Pies. All entries must be dropped off at the Library Park Gazebo between 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Judging criteria include: taste, appearance, and texture. Judging will begin at 11:15 a.m. and the winners will be announced in the afternoon.
Wristbands are on presale at the Checkout Building and Clubhouse in Recreation Park for $8 per wristband. Be sure to buy your wristband early to save as they will increase to $10 on the day of the event, The wristbands give access to the rides and games offered throughout the fair and carnival. Avoid the line and buy early!

Emergency Alert Test Tuesday, May 7th
On Tuesday, May 7th at 11:30 a.m., Alert SouthBay will test its Wireless Alert System for the South Bay region. Everyone with a wireless phone within range of the cell tower in the South Bay during the test will receive a message that reads "THIS IS A TEST," including El Segundo. Poet Laureate Applications Due May 31st
The City of El Segundo Cultural Development Program is seeking applications from qualified poets, writers, and literary artists interested in becoming our next Poet Laureate! The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term and lead programs aimed at promoting and engaging the public in literary arts.Click here for details.

Super CPR Saturday & ESFD Open House Saturday, May 11th
Super CPR Saturday - Saturday, May 11th is Super CPR Saturday! Join us at Fire Station 1 to learn how to administer Adult CPR using lecture, videos, and hands-on demonstrations. Participants receive a Red Cross CPR 2-year certification. This FREE class is designed for all age ranges that can understand the information. Two classes are offered: from 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., and 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. All participants must register before May 11th. Sign up here!

El Segundo Fire Department's Open House opens the doors of Fire Station No.1 to the public and invites the community to come out and tour the fire station, check out the fire engines and trucks up close, and learn about their local firefighters and safety personnel. The event is Saturday, May 11th, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Fire Station 1. There will be live music, food, activities for kids, and more! Hope to see you there!

May Library Programs and Activities
Evening Book Tasting - On May 14th, sample a curated selection of genre varietals from El Segundo Public Library's literary buffet. Staff will guide you through the genre tasting menu. Join other readers to discuss and discover what pleases your literary palate in the relaxed, convivial atmosphere at Richmond Bar and Grill.
Space is very limited, and reservations are required. Suitable for ages 18 and older.

Folktales with Shadow Puppets - On May 22nd, celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month with author Sunny Seki’s “Sharing Folktales with Shadow Puppets” program! Children will listen to Sunny’s folktales and learn how puppets and sets are made from 3:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.

Elderfest - Saturday, May 25th
Join us on Saturday, May 25th, at the Joslyn Center from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. as we celebrate all older adults in the community. This year's theme is "Powered by Connection". Elderfest is an opportunity to explore the many ways older adults remain active and involved with their communities. The event includes, entertainment, raffled goods, recognition of the El Segundo "Older American of the Year" by elected officials, and a free lunch for local seniors. Reservations are required. Los Angeles County Aging & Disabilities Department Launches its Access to Technology Program
On April 15th, the Los Angeles Aging & Disabilities Department launched its Access to Technology (ATT) program, designed to help older adults and people with disabilities get connected online. For those that qualify for the program, they'll give you a tablet, teach you about staying safe online, and provide Internet for 2 years - all for free! Plus, you can take free classes to learn more.

We Heard You! Community Survey Feedback Put into Action at City's Annual Strategic Planning Session
Thank you to everyone who participated in the annual community survey. Your feedback is invaluable and helps the City measure the effectiveness of local services and programs.
The information from this survey directly contributed to the City's operational decisions at the City's strategic planning session that took place on April 30th. Some aligned priorities discussed at the session include:
- Addressing the unsheltered homeless population
- Providing quality infrastructure (eg. parking and capital improvement projects)
- Maintaining the City's "small town" character
- Allocating resources to support local businesses across industries
- E-bike Safety

CERT Training Sign Up

Construction Activity Around Town
El Segundo Boulevard Improvement Project is in the final stages of being completed, with pavement, traffic signals, and landscaping restored by the end of May - weather permitting. Repaving activity continues on El Segundo Blvd. between Illinois St. and Isis Ave., and Nash St. between Imperial Hwy. and El Segundo Blvd., and Douglas St. between Imperial Hwy. and Rosecrans Ave. During the process, there will be lane closures but at least one lane will remain open at all times in all directions. Commuters should expect delays and consider taking alternative routes. Click here for full details, including the schedule and map.
Additional improvements include installation of curb ramps and bike lanes, traffic signal modifications, drainage modifications, and landscaping. Funding is provided by Metro.
Wastewater Infrastructure Improvements Project construction activities have started and are expected to continue through June 4, 2024. Work hours are Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tomovich and Associates, the contractor for this project, delivers notices to affected residents one week before construction and posts "no parking" signs at least 72 hours in advance, where needed. Hyperion Update
Below are the most recent updates on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, which is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles:
- Hyperion reports that between Monday, April 15 and Tuesday, April 16, 2024, Digester Battery E at Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant experienced leaks. The leaks have been stopped, and Hyperion staff are actively engaged in the cleanup and drainage process to enable a thorough investigation of the cause. Click here for full details.
- Hyperion continues the final installment of tank cover replacement for Battery D which is expected to be completed in June of 2024.

 El Segundo City Hall will be closed on Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day.
City Hall's regular operating hours are:
- Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
