El Segundo Welcomes New Police Chief Saul Rodriguez
The City of El Segundo is proud to announce the appointment of Saul Rodriguez as the new Chief of Police for the El Segundo Police Department, effective April 8, 2024.
With over 30 years of distinguished service in law enforcement, Chief Rodriguez brings a wealth of law enforcement and leadership experience and a deep dedication to community safety.
"I am deeply honored and humbled to be appointed as the Chief of Police for the El Segundo Police Department,” said Chief Rodriguez. “I am committed to working collaboratively with our officers, community members, and city leaders to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and accountability. As a resident of the South Bay, my family and I are looking forward to serving this wonderful community. CERT Training Sign Up
Sign up to learn the basics of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) through the El Segundo Fire Department's FREE, hands-on, in-person four day training! Training will take place over the weekends of May 31st and June 7th at Fire Station 2. Click here for details and register today!

Volunteer Patrol Program
The El Segundo Police Department is looking for volunteers to join the El Segundo Volunteer Patrol (ESVP) program. ESVP teaches volunteers to be the extra eyes and ears of our City and fosters a collaborative partnership between our local police and community members. Click here for details and to apply.

Summer Camp Registration Opens April 1st and April 8th
Getting ready for summer fun? Registration for Summer Camps 2024 opens April 1st at 9:00 a.m. for residents and April 8th at 9:00 a.m. for non-residents. The El Segundo Recreation, Parks, and Library department offers weekly summer camps for tots, kids, and teens from June 10th to August 23rd, including camp cowabunga, tiny tots, sports camps, and more!

April Library Programs and Activities
The El Segundo Public Library will celebrate National Library Week from April 7th - 13th. A few events taking place include:
Craft 'N Chat - On April 8th, redesign a classic book jacket from noon - 1:00 p.m.
Yuki Shibamoto Free Concert - On April 13th, Yuki Shibamoto will perform classical, popular and original music from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Baila Baila Fee Bilingual Concert - On April 24th Celebrate El Día de Los Niños with a bilingual Spanish and English concert featuring Baila Baila! Children will sing and dance along in this interactive program from 10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

Hometown Fair & Carnival – Saturday, May 4th
On Saturday, May 4th, the Hometown Fair & Carnival will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Library Park and the 600 Block N. Main Street. Festivities for this event include music and entertainment from local talent, carnival rides, and a community expo.
Wristbands will go on presale at the Clubhouse in Recreation Park on April 8th for $8 per wristband and $10 on the day of the event. The wristbands give access to the rides and games offered throughout the fair and carnival. Avoid the line and buy early! For more details and information, call 310-524-2700, or click here.

Rep. Ted Lieu Secures Funds to Improve Emergency Response Efforts in El Segundo
On March 25, 2024, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) announced that he secured $322,500 in federal funding to improve emergency and disaster preparedness efforts in the City of El Segundo. City staff applied for this grant to upgrade the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) with new technology and equipment, enabling the City to be better equipped to respond to local emergencies and disasters such as hazardous material incidents, earthquakes, fires, severe weather events, and more. We Heard You! New Lighting Installed Along Downtown Main Street
In the City's annual community survey, businesses expressed a need for more lighting along Main Street. As a direct result of your feedback, the City has recently completed the installation of eight solar light fixtures along the 400 block of Main Street.
In February, a solar light fixture sample was installed along Main Street - in front of Tapizon - to enhance the lighting in the area. After evaluating the effectiveness of the lights, staff decided to complete the installation.
Thank you for your continued feedback! It helps the City ensure we are meeting the community's needs.

Youth Advisory Council
The City is establishing a Youth Advisory Council as an educational program for local high school students to learn about local decision-making processes and city operations.
The Youth Advisory Council will be student-led, with oversight from City staff. Participation is open to students from El Segundo, Da Vinci and Vistamar High Schools, in addition to students who are home-schooled in El Segundo. City's Annual Strategic Planning Meeting Tuesday, April 30th
The public is invited to attend a strategic planning session on Tuesday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m. in the Sue Carter Room at the El Segundo Public Library.
The session will discuss the City's current strategic goals and top priorities for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The plan defines City Council's overall direction, vision, values, and goals, with the mission of providing a great place to live, work and visit.

Construction Activity Around Town
El Segundo Boulevard Improvement Project construction activity continues on El Segundo Blvd. between Illinois Street and Isis Avenue. During the process, there will be lane closures but at least one lane will remain open at all times in all directions. Commuters should expect delays and consider taking alternative routes. Additional improvements include installation of curb ramps and bike lanes, traffic signal modifications, drainage modifications, and landscaping. Funding is provided by Metro.
Wastewater Infrastructure Improvements Project construction activities have started and are expected to continue through June 4, 2024. Work hours are Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tomovich and Associates, the contractor for this project, delivers notices to affected residents one week before construction and posts "no parking" signs at least 72 hours in advance, where needed. Hyperion Update
Below are the most recent updates on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, which is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles:
- Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) secured $3,452,972 for Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant modernization for spill prevention containment efforts.
- On March 18, 2024, the City participated in a joint legislative meeting with the City of Los Angeles (L.A.) regarding Hyperion. During the meeting, the City of L.A. admitted their shortcomings and laid out their plan for organizational changes at Hyperion that will focus on external affairs, government relations, employee engagement and regulatory compliance. The proposed changes will be reflected in the budget that Mayor Karen Bass is scheduled to bring to City Council in April. Meeting attendees included Mayor Bass's Director of Public Works Ryan Jackson, L.A. Sanitation senior leadership, and representatives from the offices of L.A. City council districts 5 and 11, L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Congressman Ted Lieu, and Senator Ben Allen.
- Hyperion continues the final installment of tank cover replacement for Battery D which is expected to be completed in June of 2024.

The 32nd annual Run For Education, hosted by El Segundo’s PTA Council, will take place on Saturday, April 27th at 8:00 a.m. The family-friendly event features a tour of downtown El Segundo and its neighborhoods.
