National Weather Service Issues
High Surf and Coastal Flood Advisory for Los Angeles County

Avoid Beaches

The National Weather Service is forecasting more rain and wind in the Los Angeles Area beginning Sunday, February 18, 2024, and may last through Wednesday, February 21, 2024. They have issued a flood watch for Los Angeles County and a high surf and coastal flood advisory for all Los Angeles County beaches. We are advising residents to be prepared.

El Segundo facilities are currently out of sandbags. ESFD and the Public Works department are working to make more available.

Sandbag locations can be found through the L.A. County website,
call first to make sure sandbags are available.

Sandbag Locations

WHAT: Large breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet with dangerous rip currents. Minor coastal flooding expected during the early morning high tides between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

WHERE: Southwest California, including Los Angeles County.

WHEN: From Saturday afternoon through Wednesday morning.

IMPACTS: Flooding of sea water is likely, around the time of high tide, over vulnerable low-lying coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches, and walkways. There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.

Power Outages

Take inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity. Plan for batteries and other alternative power sources to meet your needs if the power goes out such as a portable charger or power bank. Have flashlights for every household member. Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.

Know your Medical Needs

Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Know how long your medications can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.

Protect your Pets

As heavy rainfall continues, make sure to keep your pets close and have pet carriers, food, water and medications ready for their needs in the event local authorities request evacuation.
