We Heard You! "You Are Not Alone" Program
In the City's annual Net Promoter Survey (open now through March 31st), public safety emerged as a top priority; especially, for our senior community members. As a direct result of your feedback, the El Segundo Police Department has launched the "You Are Not Alone" (YANA) Program.
The YANA program is free to all El Segundo residents and helps provide ongoing contact for seniors, persons with disabilities, or anyone who can benefit from routine contact. El Segundo Police Department volunteers make phone calls to participants weekly on a day and time designated by the resident. If three phone calls are unanswered, a phone call is made to the emergency contact on file. If after both attempts, the resident still cannot be reached, the YANA volunteer contacts the ESPD program coordinator, and a welfare check is made at the person's residence.
Thank you for your feedback! It helps the City ensure we are meeting the community's needs.

Hyperion Update
Below are the most recent updates on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, which is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles:
- On Friday, February 23, 2024, El Segundo City Council issued an official letter to City of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass demanding immediate action to remove the Los Angeles Sanitation Director and General Manager from office. Click here to read the press release and official letter.
- AQMD received over 90 odor complaints in the past week and issued five more notices of violation (NOVs) to Hyperion for odors on February 13, 15, 16, 24, and 25 (that's a total of seven NOVs since January 28, 2024). AQMD is currently investigating the cause of those odors.
- Due to the extreme rain over February 4th and 5th, Hyperion experienced an increased flow.
- As a result of that rain, some process equipment at Hyperion was damaged, which led to biogas flaring and the temporary use of the tanks in Primary Battery D – the only tanks whose covers have not yet been replaced. Hyperion has reported that they stopped using these tanks on February 7th and the biogas flaring was stopped at 7:30 p.m. on February 22nd.
- In order to repair the damaged equipment, Hyperion conducted cleaning and working activities at various locations in the plant that produce odors.
- Hyperion had extensive electrical issues at the facility, causing them to have to store more solids than usual in their truck-loading facility, which resulted in odors. They report that the repairs of the truck-loading facility were completed on February 17th and that other process areas are being addressed. Click here to read the full Hyperion Plant Status Update - February 21, 2024.
- Hyperion continues the final installment of tank cover replacement for Battery D which is expected to be completed in June of 2024.
Additional details and documents continue to be shared on elsegundo.org/hyperion and at future City Council meetings. Sign up to receive the latest Hyperion news and updates from the City of El Segundo directly to your inbox.
