National Weather Service Forecasts Heavy Rain, Flooding, and Strong Winds Across Los Angeles Area
The National Weather Service is forecasting a second storm in the Los Angeles Area beginning Sunday February 4, 2024, and may last through Wednesday February 7, 2024, bringing 3-5 inches of rain into the South Bay. They are predicting the potential for heavy rain and flooding within the first 24-36 hours. We are advising residents to be prepared:
SANDBAGS: El Segundo is currently out of sandbags. ESFD and the Public Works department are working to make more available. Sandbag supplies are limited across L.A. County. For sandbag distribution locations, please go to the L.A. County website and call first to verify sandbag availability: https://pw.lacounty.gov/dsg/sandbags/
WHAT: Flooding caused by widespread heavy rain and wind is possible.
WHERE: Southwest California, including Los Angeles County.
WHEN: From late Saturday evening through early Wednesday morning.
IMPACTS: The storm has potential to bring widespread heavy rain, with a risk of damaging and life-threatening flooding, and strong and damaging southeast winds.

PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Californians are reminded to dial 2-1-1 or 3-1-1 to get help or ask questions. If you have a critical emergency, call 9-1-1.

Report Damage and Debris
Use the Report It portal to report issues in the City like flooding, clogged storm drains, fallen trees, etc.
Driving and Road Closures
Avoid non-essential travel during peak of storms. Avoid travel on flooded roads, turn around if you encounter flooded areas.
Power Outages
Take inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity. Plan for batteries and other alternative power sources to meet your needs if the power goes out such as a portable charger or power bank. Have flashlights for every household member. Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
Know your Medical Needs
Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Know how long your medications can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
Protect your Pets
As heavy rainfall continues, make sure to keep your pets close and have pet carriers, food, water and medications ready for their needs in the event local authorities request evacuation.
