Hometown Fair and Carnival Saturday, May 6th
On Saturday, May 6th, the Hometown Fair and Carnival will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Library Park and the 600 Block N. Main Street. Festivities for this event include music and entertainment from local talent, carnival rides, and a community expo.
Wristbands will go on presale at the Clubhouse in Recreation Park on April 1st for $8 per wristband and $10 on the day of the event. The wristbands give access to the rides and games offered throughout the fair and carnival. Avoid the line and buy early!
The Bake-Off event will award prizes to winners in various categories. Categories include: cookies, petite desserts, breads and rolls, muffins, cakes and pies. Entries for the Bake-Off are open to anyone wanting to show off their baking skills. Bake-Off entries will be due between 10:00am to 11:00am. Judging criteria include: taste, appearance, and texture. Judging starts at 11:15am with winners for the Bake-Off will be announced at 1:00pm.
El Segundo High School groups are coordinating food booths and game booths in efforts to fundraise for their clubs. A variety of vendors will be selling one-of-a-kind handmade crafts, while the El Segundo police Department and El Segundo Non-Profit groups will participate in the event to provide information about their organization and programs. El Segundo Fire Chief Deena Lee Retires After 20 Years of Public Service
El Segundo Fire Chief Deena Lee has announced her retirement after 20 years of professional fire service, effective April 27, 2023. Chief Lee became the first female fire chief in the South Bay when she was appointed in October 2021. She brought the highly successful “Fired Up! Girls Empowerment Camp” to El Segundo and leaves a legacy of encouraging and inspiring girls and women to join the fire service.
“We are grateful to Chief Lee for her many years of service to the El Segundo Fire Department and wish her well in her retirement,” said City Manager Darrell George.

Hyperion State of Emergency Update
At every City Council meeting, the City Manager and City Attorney provide an update on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. Click here to watch the most recent Hyperion update.
Below are the most recent updates:
- On Monday, April 24, 2023, the Natural Resources Committee passed bill AB 1216 with a vote of eight to three. Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi introduced the bill, and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Pimentel and Councilmember Ryan Baldino, joined by City Manager Darrell George, provided testimony on the assembly floor at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Once the committee process is completed, the bill will go to the Senate. Track teh bill's most recent language and status here.
- The Mayor, City Manager, and Director of Public Works met with representatives from offices of Senator Ben Allen, Congressman Ted Lieu, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, and County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell to discuss Hyperion. It was the first time all of the legislative offices came together in support. It was decided that we will meet regularly until all Hyperion impacts are addressed.
- On April 3, 2023, the Los Angeles Water Quality Control Board announced that it is proposing a $21.7 million dollar penalty to Hyperion in connection with its release of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean in July 2021. This is the largest penalty the board has ever proposed for violations of a waste discharge permit. Read the full press release here
- Perimeter Road Improvement Project - due to recent rain events, Saturday work will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through May to ensure project completion in Summer 2023. Minimal construction noise is anticipated. Full details can be found here.
- Dr. Stenstrom continues to coordinate with Hyperion regarding the updates for the SCAQMD Abatement Orders and Ad Hoc Committee's 33 recommendations. Hyperion has been cooperating with these efforts.
- The Hyperion Ad Hoc Committee comprised of Councilmember Carol Pirsztuk, Councilmember Ryan Baldino, and Environmental Committee Chair Tracey Miller-Zarneke continue to meet with City Manager weekly.

El Segundo Fire Department Open House Saturday, May 13th

The El Segundo Fire Department's Open House opens the doors of Fire Station No.1 to the public and invites the community to come out and tour the fire station, check out the fire engines and trucks up close, and learn about their local firefighters and safety personnel. The event is this Saturday, May 13th, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Fire Station 1. There will be live music, food, and activities for kids. Hope to see you there!
Super CPR Saturday - Saturday, May 20th
Mark your calendars! Saturday, May 20th is Super CPR Saturday! Super CPR Saturday offers free CPR classes to the community. Participants receive a Red Cross CPR 2-year certification. The class is designed for all age ranges that can understand the information, and includes lectures, videos, and hands-on CPR. Classes are offered at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. All participants must register before May 20th. Sign up here!

Elderfest - Saturday, May 20th
Join us on Saturday, May 20th, at the Joslyn Center from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm as we celebrate all older adults in the community. This year's theme is "Aging Unbound". Elderfest is an opportunity to explore the many ways older adults remain active and involved with their communities. The event includes, entertainment, raffled goods, recognition of the El Segundo "Older American of the Year" by elected officials, and a free lunch for local seniors. Reservations are required. 24/7 Residential Building & Solar Permitting Online
The City of El Segundo is excited to announce the launch of a pilot program for online residential building and solar permits. Residential building permits can now be applied for online via the Residential E-Z Permit Hub. Contractors can apply for roof mounted solar panels for single family dwellings, pay online, and obtain the permit instantaneously via SolarAPP+. South Bay Rain Water Harvesting Program
Harvesting the rain is a simple, low-cost way to save money on water bills, provide fresh soft water for your plants, and allow you to be a steward of your local watershed. The South Bay Rainwater Harvesting Program provides helpful information and resources on how to capture rainwater for use in your garden, patio or other places on your property. Check out their website, for resources on simple DIY Rainwater Harvesting options, including swales, rain gardens, and rain barrels.

SoCalGas Gas Assistance Fund
If you're having difficulty paying your natural gas bill, the Gas Assistance Fund (GAF) may be able to provide you, or someone you know, with a one-time grant for the amount of the gas bill, not to exceed $400.00. Additionally, those facing certain financial hardships may be eligible for extra grant funding. Make an appointment with your local agency to see what your household may qualify for. El Segundo's Tapizon Bar + Kitchen on KNBC's "CA Live"
In April, Danielle Nottingham with KNBC's "California Live" stopped by El Segundo's very own Tapizon Bar & Kitchen, taking viewers inside the vibrant restaurant that’s serving traditional Brazilian delights with a twist. Watch the California Live segment here!
Tapizon features a menu of "Tropi-Cali" cuisine, a fusion of Brazilian and Californian flavors. The restauraunt is open Tuesday - Sunday, located at 450 Main Street in El Segundo. For more details, go to their website at www.tapizon.com.

El Segundo "In a Minute"
“L.A. in a Minute” is a fast-growing, 60-second online video series about interesting aspects of L.A. area life including historical firsts, landmarks and other fun facts. The series started in January 2022 and its 300+ videos now have millions of views across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other platforms.
L.A. in a Minute recently highlighted El Segundo, sharing that the city is a charming and quaint beachside community, just a stone’s throw from the Pacific and why El Segundo might be the most important city in the LA area (even the world) with fun facts about Chevron, Mattel, history and proximity to LAX, LADWP’s Scattergood Steam Plant and the aviation and aerospace industry - all in under a minute!
