Women of the West Concert - Saturday, March 4th
The City of El Segundo’s Recreation, Parks and Library Division is proud to present a FREE concert entitled Women of the West on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at the El Segundo Performing Arts Center (within the El Segundo High School) to celebrate Women’s History Month. The all-female fronted lineup, features some of the best local and nationally known artists in Americana music, including award-winning musicians Manda Mosher, Abby Posner, Deb Morrison, Rosy Nolan, and June Clivas & The Ditty Boys, with special guest host Ann the Raven.
E-ticket reservations are available through Eventbrite. This concert is expected to reach maximum capacity and guests are encouraged to reserve their e-ticket as soon as possible to secure their seat. For more details about the concert, click here.
This concert is not affiliated with the El Segundo Unified School District and is funded by the El Segundo Cultural Development Program and presented by the Recreation, Parks, and Library Division.
Hyperion State of Emergency Update
At every City Council meeting, the City Manager and City Attorney provide an update on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. Below are the most recent updates:
- On January 25, 2023, City Staff participated in the AQMD board hearing regarding Hyperion. Out of this meeting, AQMD issued a robust expanded order of abatement to Hyperion, including 28 additional conditions which, if implemented, should result in the odor nuisance being resolved and measures to put in place to ensure it does not happen again. - The City has secured a third-party expert in wastewater treatment plants to assist the City regarding Hyperion.
- On February 7, 2023 City Council approved the formation of a Hyperion Ad Hoc Committee to coordinate actions for improvements at Hyperion. Councilmembers Baldino and Pirsztuk will serve on the committee.
- The next SCAQMD Board Hearing is scheduled to be held on June 20, 2023. The link and the agenda will be posted on the City’s Website in advance.
- Perimeter Road Improvement Project is 80% complete.
- LA City Board of Public Works approved a motion to expedite the refurbishment of Hyperion's primary clarifiers Battery B, C, and D. Hyperion now expects completion of the refurbishment by June 2024.
- Hyperion staff is cleaning primary battery tanks in preparation for tank cover replacement. The Cleaning started on January 16th and is continuing through mid-March. On September 8th, 2022, City Council declared a state of emergency for the City of El Segundo in response to the ongoing release of noxious gases and odors from Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant.

Fired Up! Girls' Empowerment Camp Registration Closes March 10th
The El Segundo Fire and Recreation, Parks, and Library Departments have teamed up again to offer its second annual "Fired Up! Girls' Empowerment Camp". This inspiring and educational two-day experience for girls aged 12-19 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 25th- 26th. The camp will give girls the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real firefighting gear and empower each other to accomplish their goals.
The cost per attendee is $25 for residents and $32 for non-residents, and includes snacks, lunch, and a t-shirt. The deadline to register at esrec.org is March 10th. For more information, call (310) 524-2362 or click here.

Star Party! - Friday March 17th
The El Segundo Recreation, Parks, and Library Department invites you to an evening of stargazing at the annual Star Party held at Hilltop Park on Friday, March 17th, from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. The South Bay Astronomical Society will provide telescopes (or feel free to bring your own!) to share a view of the galaxy and educate future astronomers about the wonders of the last frontier. There will also be an "out-of-this-world" costume contest and scavenger hunt with prizes! For more information, call 310-524-2700, or click here.

Free Paper Shredding, E-Waste, & Mulch Distribution Saturday, March 18th
The City of El Segundo and EDCO are sponsoring a FREE paper shredding, e-waste collection, and mulch distribution event on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the El Segundo Maintenance Facility, 150 Illinois Street. There will be certified shredding trucks during the event, and all items will be shredded ONSITE! Limited to two bankers boxes (10”x12”x15”) per household.
Unwanted electronics will also be collected including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, etc. However, no household hazardous waste (HHW) material will be accepted.
Also available will be free mulch for residents (while supplies last). This is a self-serve, self-loading service, so please bring your own cans/bags and shovel. Limit of 3 cans/bags per vehicle. If you plan to haul your mulch in an open truck or trailer, please remember to bring a tarp to cover your material. The event is for El Segundo residents only. Community Emergency Response Team Training Saturday, April 1st
ESFD is happy to announce the return of its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training Program. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
This year's academy is a hybrid course and is available to El Segundo Residents 18 years or older. Trainees must complete the online class before attending in person on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 at Fire Station 2. To learn more about the program and to reserve your spot, click here.
