EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. (January 13, 2023) – Sandra “Sandy” Jacobs was a courageous and kind trailblazer and dedicated public servant. Born in Kentucky, Sandy’s family moved to El Segundo in the early 1950’s for her father’s job in the aerospace industry. After graduating from El Segundo High School in 1960, she attended the University of the Pacific, where she met her husband, Karl, and graduated with a BA in Group Work and Recreation and Elementary Education.
In 1981, Sandy, Karl, and their daughter, Jennifer, returned to El Segundo. Sandy helped manage, and eventually became president of South Bay Welder’s Supply, Inc., her family’s business. She also opened her own business, House of Cards, and co-owned Pinsational with her husband. Fulfilling her passion for economic development, Sandy became the first female president of the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce in 1989.
Seven years later, Sandy made history when she became the first woman to serve as Mayor of the City of El Segundo from 1996-1998 and continued as Mayor Pro Tem until 2004. An extremely active member of the community, Sandy served on over a dozen civic and charitable organizations; a founding member of Downtown El Segundo, Inc., the first president of the Library Board of Trustees, and named Switzer Center’s South Bay Woman of the Year in 1999. Sandy’s contributions to the City of El Segundo cannot be overstated, she was integral to shaping the City into the thriving community that it is today.
Always generous with her time, Sandy was a source of expertise and encouragement to the next generation. “She was a dear friend and mentor to me and many others in our wonderful city,” said Mayor Boyles. “She will be missed tremendously.”
“El Segundo lost a leader, servant, and friend with Sandy's passing,” added Councilmember Carol Pirsztuk. “Thankfully, her legacy will live on as she helped set the path forward for our city and future leaders.” A respected leader, Sandy made decisions thoughtfully and with integrity. “She had a bright and ready smile, coupled with a depth of knowledge and love for the City of El Segundo” remembers Councilmember Lance Giroux. “She was a true pioneer for women, and I am a better person for having known her.”
The City is grateful and fortunate to have benefitted from Sandy’s guidance and years of service. Her contributions live on in the daily heartbeat of El Segundo.
