El Segundo Honors Black History Month
At the February 7th City Council meeting, El Segundo City Councilmembers will proclaim February Black History Month. The proclamation urges all citizens to join together in making this a period of rededication to the principles of justice and equality for all people. Black History Month provides an opportunity to become more knowledgeable about black heritage and honor the many black leaders who have contributed to the progress of our nation. The African American Heritage Page of the National Archives holds a wealth of free material documenting the Black experience. Click here to check it out.

Hyperion State of Emergency Update
At every City Council meeting, the City Manager and City Attorney provide an update on the situation with the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. Below are the most recent updates:
- Hyperion established a website that shows the 24/7 results of fence line air monitors, which detect Hydrogen Sulfide. Click here for the Hyperion Air Monitoring Website.
- SCAQMD held 2 Board Hearings regarding Hyperion's orders of abatement on December 15th and January 25th. The City Manager submitted letters on behalf of the City for both hearings, which can be found on the Hyperion Page of the City's website.
- Perimeter Road Improvement Project is 70% complete.
- Hyperion staff is cleaning primary battery tanks in preparation for tank cover replacement. The Cleaning started on January 16th and is continuing through mid-March. On September 8th, 2022, City Council declared a state of emergency for the City of El Segundo in response to the ongoing release of noxious gases and odors from Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant.

Downtown Specific Plan Update Public Scoping Meeting Thursday, February 2nd
On Thursday, February 2nd, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers, the City will hold a public scoping meeting to solicit input on issues to be studied in the EIR for the Downtown Specific Plan Update. At the meeting, City staff will give a presentation to the public describing the Downtown Specific Plan Update project and the potential environmental impacts to be studied in the project EIR. Written comments are being accepted, until 5:00 p.m., on Monday, February 13th, 2023.

Valentine's Day Tiny Tot Tea Party
Wristbands are on-sale now for the annual Valentine's Day Tiny Tot Tea Party taking place at the George E. Gordon Clubhouse on Tuesday, February 14th from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Wristbands can be purchased in-person at the Clubhouse for $10 each.
This event is for children ages 18 months to 5 years old with an accompanying adult. The tea party will include refreshments, photo op area, and special character visit. Fancy dress is encouraged! For more information, please call (310) 524-2362.

Free Paper Shredding, E-Waste, & Mulch Distribution Saturday, February 25th
The City of El Segundo and EDCO are sponsoring a FREE paper shredding, e-waste collection, and mulch distribution event on Saturday, February 25th, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the El Segundo Maintenance Facility, 150 Illinois Street. There will be certified shredding trucks during the event, and all items will be shredded ONSITE! Limited to two bankers boxes (10”x12”x15”) per household.
Unwanted electronics will also be collected including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, etc. However, no household hazardous waste (HHW) material will be accepted.
Also available will be free mulch for residents (while supplies last). This is a self-serve, self-loading service, so please bring your own cans/bags and shovel. Limit of 3 cans/bags per vehicle. If you plan to haul your mulch in an open truck or trailer, please remember to bring a tarp to cover your material. The event is for El Segundo residents only. Women of the West Concert - Saturday, March 4th
The City of El Segundo’s Recreation, Parks and Library Division is proud to present a FREE concert entitled Women of the West on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, at the El Segundo Performing Arts Center (within the El Segundo High School) to celebrate Women’s History Month. Award-winning artist Manda Mosher and music producer Deb Morrison bring together a female-fronted lineup, featuring some of the best local and nationally known artists in Americana music, including June Clivas, Rosy Nolan, Abby Posner, and Aubrey Richmond.
E-tickets go live on Eventbrite at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6th, 2023. This concert is expected to reach maximum capacity and guests are encouraged to reserve their e-ticket as soon as possible to secure their seat. For more details about the concert, go to www.elsegundo.org.
This concert is not affiliated with the El Segundo Unified School District and is funded by the El Segundo Cultural Development Program and presented by the Recreation, Parks, and Library Division.

The El Segundo Fire and Recreation, Parks, and Library Departments have teamed up again to offer its second annual "Fired Up! Girls' Empowerment Camp". This inspiring and educational two-day experience for girls aged 12-19 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 25th- 26th. The camp will give girls the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real firefighting gear and empower each other to accomplish their goals.
The cost per attendee is $25 for residents and $32 for non-residents, and includes snacks, lunch, and a t-shirt. Registration for residents opens on February 8th and February 15th for non-residents. Visit esrec.org to register, and for more information, call (310) 524-2362.

El Segundo City Hall will be closed on Monday, February 20th in observance of Presidents Day.
City Hall's regular operating hours are:
- Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
