Message from the City Manager's Office
|
|
The City of El Segundo would like to welcome Interim City Manager Darrell George. Mr. George's contract was approved at the March 1st City Council meeting. Mr. George will lead the City's day-to-day operations until a new city manager is appointed.
Most recently, Mr. George was a senior advisor with Climatec and has more than 30 years of experience in local government. He's held numerous positions in the cities of Santa Monica, Downey, and Pomona, and served for 15 years as the city manager for the City of Duarte, from where he retired in December 2019. During his tenure in the public sector, Darrell spearheaded many projects, including Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, Downey's landmark development Downey Landing, and more recently, Duarte's Gold Line Station and laying groundwork for the City of Hope's future campus development. The City launched a nationwide recruitment effort and is actively seeking candidates for the permanent appointment of a new city manager. Welcome, Darrell!

The City of El Segundo would also like to welcome Interim Community Services Director John Jones. He is replacing outgoing Community Services Director Melissa McCollum, who accepted an exciting new position and will be missed by City staff and the community.
Mr. Jones most recently served as Interim Community Services Director for the City of Hermosa Beach. Mr. Jones worked for the City of Torrance for 40 years serving as Recreation Programs Administrator and Community Services Director. He retired from the City of Torrance in 2020. Welcome John!

Meet El Segundo's First Poet Laureate
Meet Hope Anita Smith, El Segundo’s inaugural Poet Laureate. She is an award-winning author, poet, illustrator, and motivational speaker. Smith will serve as a liaison, advocate, and leader for poetry, spoken word, and the literary arts.
Her hopes are to inspire El Segundo’s diverse residents to foster a greater appreciation of words. She will represent the City and the literary arts through engaging and conceptually driven, original works and cultivate critical thinking from and connections to the literary arts through public readings, in-person poetry/writing workshops and programs, and civic events. Fired Up! - Girls' Empowerment Camp
The El Segundo Fire and Community Services Departments have teamed up to offer this empowering and educational experience for girls within the local community. The “Fired Up!” Girls’ Empowerment Camp will be held on March 26th- 27th, and will give girls the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real firefighting gear, as they learn what it’s like to be a firefighter.
This two-day camp is open for girls aged 12-19, and is free for all attendees. El Segundo residents can register now, and registration for non-residents will open on March 8th. Visit esrec.org to register, and for more information, call (310) 524-2362. Learn more about the camp from Fire Chief Lee!

Tiny Tots & Cowabunga Spring Break Camps
Spring is just around the corner, and with that comes all the fun and excitement of SPRING BREAK! This year, the El Segundo Community Services Department will be hosting two spring break camp sessions, a Tiny Tot camp for ages 3-5, and Camp Cowabunga for ages 6-11.
The camps will run from April 4-8th, during the El Segundo Unified School District spring break, and registration is now open for El Segundo residents. Non-residents can register starting Tuesday, March 8th. To learn more about the camps, and find out how to register, click here.

The Spring 2022 El Segundo Community Services Recreation Guide is here! The guide covers classes and activities for all ages groups including adults, older adults, teens, youth and tots!
Online registration will available on esrec.org, starting March 7th at 9:00 a.m. for residents and March 14th at 9:00 a.m. for non-residents.

Living Library Returns to El Segundo
The Living Library 2022: MIND invites visitors to connect with the 2022 guests of honor - the “LIVING BOOKS” - through one-on-one 20-minute conversations. This is an unique opportunity to meet “LIVING BOOKS," who stand out for seeing and identifying the needs in our community and provide care through their work for positive change.
The Living Library seeks to foster empathy and break down stereotypes through one-on-one conversations with outstanding guest speakers. Through these one-on-one conversations, chances are that one realizes that we all have much more in common than what makes us different.
On March 12, 2022 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Living Books will be available for check out at ESMoA. Please click here to review the available slots and sign up. A library card is not required.

Star Party!
The El Segundo Community Services Department invites you to an evening of stargazing at the annual Star Party held at Hilltop Parking Lot on Friday, March 25, from 8:00 - 10:00 PM. Members of the South Bay Astronomical Society will be in attendance with telescopes to share a view of the galaxy and educate future astronomers about the wonders of the last frontier. Pacific Coast Commons Update
The Planning Commission recently adopted a resolution to recommend that City Council approve the Pacific Coast Commons Project, which will use existing properties along Pacific Coast Highway to build modern, affordable housing and make PCH more pedestrian-friendly. The project is slated to be reviewed by City Council at the March 15th meeting.

New Features for Online Utility Billing
The City of El Segundo is adding new online features to the water and wastewater utility billing experience. The new features will make it easier to receive, view and pay your bill online.
The enhancements are scheduled to go live in early summer, and current customers will need to enroll to take advantage of the new upgrades. Learn more about the enhancements and enrollment here.
