At the 8/18/26 Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting, Supervisors Ferrero and Turnboo, in their role as the VHR Ad Hoc Committee, recommended several changes to the VHR Ordinance to bring more revenue to the County. They made their recommendations based on one listening session and one survey. The survey results were mixed and raised many questions that are left unanswered. The most concerning recommendation is to remove the 500’ VHR buffer on 5-acre or larger parcels on the West Slope of the County. I have discussed this with several residents who oppose removing the buffer because it creates the potential for increased noise from tourists and for them to lose their sense of community if VHRs saturate their neighborhoods. Additionally, 5-acre and larger parcels tend to be in the more rural, remote parts of the county, and questions were raised about the wisdom of renting large, remote properties to tourists, given our current wildfire concerns. When I asked the BOS for more public outreach to gather feedback from residents who live in neighborhoods of 5-acre or larger parcels, Supervisor Ferrero refused, saying, “The majority of the public comment that we received at our meeting, I mean, it was to allow these on larger parcels, um, people you are referencing had opportunity to comment, they’ve had a few different opportunities to comment, and still, the majority of the people want us to loosen the restrictions.” You can listen to my request and Supervisor Ferrero’s response on the video recording of the meeting here: www.youtube.com/live/EgSvl9cqDhI?si=AR35j9fuIM5zWg-K&t=14677 Here is my last, of many, requests for the Ad Hoc to do outreach to gather feedback from potentially impacted residents: Here is the link to watch the entire agenda item from the beginning: www.youtube.com/live/EgSvl9cqDhI?si=9Z0i3maoCCRgLhfm&t=8228 You must speak up now if you do not want the BOS to move forward with removing the 500’ VHR buffer between 5-acre or larger parcels on the West Slope. The BOS may be making decisions to update the VHR Ordinance by the end of October, so expediency is encouraged. Send your email to Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at edc.cob@edcgov.us with a cc: to WestSlopeVHR@edcgov.us and ask the Clerk to distribute your comments to all five (5) BOS members. Let the board members know whether you support or oppose removing the 500’ buffer on 5-acre or larger parcels on the West Slope of the County.
