Do you want to be part of the movement to manage pests, more sustainably, using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques?
Funded by a 2023 DPR Alliance Grant, IPM Institute of North America, in partnership with Green Shield Certified (GSC) and University of California Integrated Pest Management (UC IPM), is creating an Urban IPM Apprenticeship Program.
Interested individuals are invited to apply for this two-year Urban IPM Apprenticeship Program. Participants will develop the required skills to evaluate, improve, and implement outdoor and indoor IPM programs and practices across three key regions in California (Los Angeles, Sacramento, and the San Francisco Bay Area).
Apprentices who complete the program will develop skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Business management in the structural and landscape pest management industry;
- Best management practices for rodents, invertebrates, weeds and plant pathogens;
- State and federal regulations that impact the structural and landscape pest management industry;
- Pesticide selection, mixing, application, storage, and safety strategies that protect human and environmental health and offer additional protections beyond regulatory requirements; and
- How to complete comprehensive inspections to determine optimal IPM strategies for management of structural and landscape pests.
Individuals who participate in the apprenticeship program will receive the following resources, recognition, and support:
- Access to 12 educational webinars between June 2024 and April 2025;
- An opportunity to shadow GSC founder, Thomas Green, during an on-site IPM evaluation for a local facility, structural, or landscape management service provider;
- Attendance to IPM Institute of North America’s IPM Symposium (which includes a one-day structural and landscape IPM workshop) in San Diego from March 3-6, 2025;
- Funding and technical support from GSC staff to conduct one on-site IPM evaluation for a local facility, structural, or landscape management service provider;
- A certificate from GSC and UC IPM recognizing completion of program; and
- Up to 20 hours of continuing education from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and the California Structural Pest Control Board.
