Message from the Director
As California’s summer months blaze on, we continue to see higher temperatures across the state. As the climate changes, extreme heat conditions become more frequent and more dangerous. Just last week, much of interior California reached temperatures of 110 degrees or higher for several days in a row. In response, Governor Newsom directed the Office of Emergency Services to activate its State Operations Center and move into Phase II of its Extreme Temperature Response Plan. This action ensures a 24/7, coordinated, whole-of-government response to the heat wave.
With much of summer still to come, the need for Californians to keep themselves and their families safe will continue to grow. Visit Ready.ca.gov for the latest information on extreme heat conditions and guidance on how to ensure that you are prepared for the next heat wave.

July is Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month is observed in July to celebrate the diversity of people with disabilities, along with their experiences and contributions. Boosting their visibility can promote increased self-esteem and positive community identity. Disability Pride Month challenges societal norms by advocating for equal rights and inclusion. We are encouraged to see disability as a true strength.
This month also highlights the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark law was enacted on July 26, 1990 and prevents discrimination against people with disabilities as they seek jobs, public services, and access to places. In honor of the 34th anniversary of the ADA, we invite you to join the California Commission on Disability Access for a webinar on key disability rights laws over the years and their impact on society today. Register below.

Sustainability Spotlight:
DGS Clean Transportation Unit
Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California. In response, California’s climate and clean air goals include electrifying the state vehicle fleet and encouraging state employees to drive cleaner, electric vehicles.
The Clean Transportation Unit (CTU) within DGS’ Office of Sustainability (OS) is responsible for providing electric vehicle charging infrastructure for the state fleet and state employees at state-owned facilities. So far, this small team has served 31 state departments by completing 437 individual projects with a total of 3,357 charging ports installed. These projects include Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and mobile solar-powered Level 2 charging options. Currently, 208 projects are underway that will result in an additional 1,183 charging ports.
The OS CTU also provides education and outreach to state departments to ensure that they have adequate information and the proper tools to be successful electric vehicle (EV) drivers and know best practices for charging. The unit also reviews all new EV purchases for the state fleet and provides analysis for future charging needs at state-leased facilities.
