CFRP Releases 2024 Tonnage Report

The Commercial Feed Regulatory Program (CFRP) since 2022 has published the total tonnage of commercial feed reported to the program, categorized by feed type. 

Commercial Feed Regulations Approved

The Commercial Feed Regulatory Program’s regulations aligning ingredient definitions with national standards by adding recognized official names of feed ingredients from Chapter 6 the Association of American Feed Control Officials Official Publication were approved by the Office of Administrative Law on July 1, 2025, and are now in effect. This regular rulemaking supersedes the emergency regulations adopted in November 2024.  The adopted text, endorsed Form 400, and final statement of reasons are posted to the Program’s regulations webpage,  https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/is/regulations/ffldrs_regulations.html#IngredientDefinitions. 

Ted Bert Named New Program Supervisor

Ted Bert has accepted a position as the new Senior Environmental Scientist-Supervisor for the Commercial Feed Regulatory Program (CFRP), Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship Program, and Livestock Drug Program effective July 1, 2025.

2024 Crop Year Mycotoxin Report Released

The Commercial Feed Regulatory Program (CFRP) has released results of mycotoxin analysis of 62 samples obtained between July 2024 and May 2025.

Focus on Feed Safety: Labeling of Free-Choice Feeds

This quarter’s ‘Focus on Feed Safety’ provides labeling recommendations and special considerations for the hazard analysis of free choice feeds.

2025 State of the Science Summit

California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Commercial Feed Regulatory Program (CFRP) officials recently presented at the State of the Science Summit: Reducing Methane from Animal Agriculture at UC Davis. CFRP Manager Rachelle Kennedy and Safe Animal Feed Education (SAFE) Program Senior Environmental Scientist KC Gutenberger’s presentation focused on the regulatory process for gaining state and federal approval for the use of feed additives or drugs intended to reduce enteric methane emissions in animal agriculture. AAFCO Feed Administrator’s Seminar

Senior Environmental Scientist Samantha Moran-Defty and Program Manager Rachelle Kennedy attended the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Feed Administrators Seminar May 5-9, 2025, in Campton, Kentucky. AAFCO seminars are a unique collaborative partnership between regulatory bodies, including state officials and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The seminars foster open and candid discussions about numerous issues including animal feed regulations, enforcement issues, food facts, outreach and education, industry guidance, training activities, and other significant information.

California Animal Nutrition Conference

The California Animal Nutrition Conference (CANC) was held May 7-8, 2025, in Visalia, CA, and was attended by Supervising Special Investigator Mike Davidson, Environmental Scientist Alejandro Ramirez, Environmental Scientist Amber Hayter, and Senior Environmental Scientist KC Gutenberger. The conference included numerous technical and scientific presentations covering hypocalcemia, metabolic acidosis, trace minerals, inflammation, and heat stress in dairy cattle.
