Congratulations to Jenna Leal on her appointment as the new Environmental Program Manager II (Branch Chief) of the Feed, Fertilizer, and Livestock Drugs Regulatory Services (FFLDRS) Branch.
Congratulations to Rachelle Kennedy on her appointment as the new Environmental Program Manager I of the Commercial Feed, Livestock Drugs, Safe Animal Feed Education (SAFE), and Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) Programs.
In September 2024, Chris Hansen retired as Special Investigator for the Commercial Feed Regulatory Program with 29 years of service.
Hansen started with CDFA working as a field inspector in Southern California with both feed and fertilizer industries, and then moved into the Central Vally in one of California’s most productive agriculture regions. When the Branch split feed and fertilizer into separate programs, Hansen grew with the Commercial Feed Regulatory Program and Livestock Drug Program to specialize in regulation of animal feed and drugs.
Hansen was also commissioned with United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct Tissue Residue violation follow-ups, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) investigations, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) inspections. Hansen was influential in training many of the Program’s current inspectors and leadership, including now Branch Chief Jenna Leal. We all congratulate Hansen and wish him the best in retirement.
SAFE’s Senior Specialist KC Gutenberger participated on the panel “California Methane Mitigation, Policies and Carbon Credits” at the ARPAS conference October 30, 2024, in Coalinga, California.
Gutenberger provided information regarding U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) pathways for animal feed market access and 2023 innovative agenda, CDFA’s process for products under FDA enforcement discretion, and labeling guidance for commercial feeds containing Bovaer® 10.
Program Manager Rachelle Kennedy participated in the “Farmed Seaweed Science Needs in California” workshop hosted by California Ocean Trust on November 1, 2024, in Sacramento, California.
The workshop was focused on bridging the gap between researchers and regulators and identifying gaps in research. Kennedy provided information regarding the species of seaweed which are currently approved for use in feed by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the process for contacting FDA to request pre-submission consultation regarding the research needed to support regulatory decisions on market access of new products.
