California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program grantees are hard at work implementing grant projects and transforming the school food system! Read below to learn more about the K&C Martin Farm's grant project!
The K&C Martin Farm (Home of Wellspring Charitable Gardens) was awarded California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program funds to improve, diversify, and increase crop production; expand distribution to serve more disadvantaged and underserved students; demonstrate how nutrient-dense, fresh produce improves body, brain, and emotional wellness; and engage students in sustainable farming and mental wellness practices for use at school or home.
Through this grant project, K&C Martin Farm has been able to provide weekly produce to Hughson Unified School District and bi-weekly produce to the culinary arts program at Riverbank High School, as well as host the Culinary Arts class on the farm, where they were able to harvest arugula and lettuce greens. Students and staff have shared they enjoy the variety, freshness, and taste of the lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, persimmons, and oranges!
Additionally, K&C Martin Farm has utilized grant funds to complete infrastructure improvements such as the permanent packing station, plant 10 new stone fruit trees, purchase a delivery truck, and more to increase capabilities for selling to schools.
