Apply to be a SR2S High School Representative!
- Will you be a student at Homestead, Monta Vista, or Cupertino High School next school year?
- Would you like to foster sustainable transportation at your school?
- Do you have ideas about how to encourage your fellow students to consider ditching the car drop-off line and consider walking, biking, taking transit, or carpooling?
- Do you wish more people understood the transportation challenges of people in wheelchairs?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, we encourage you to apply to be part of the Cupertino Safe Routes to School Working Group for school year 26/27! Our High School representatives are a critical part of our team and a great opportunity to become part of a municipal program and learn the ins and outs of how city governments make improvements in the community.
Recruitment is officially open to become a Safe Routes to School High School Representative. Applications are due Monday, February 23.

Learn How to Be Safe on an eBike!
eBikes are a fun way to get around! They definitely make it easier to travel longer distances, climb hills, and carry more weight (including backpacks and school supplies). We at Cupertino SR2S believe that more people on bikes is a good thing; however, there are key things to know about e-bikes before you buy and ride to keep yourself and everyone else around you safe. We've compiled some helpful resources for you and will continue to add to the list. Stay tuned for future eBike presentations and classes too!

See It To Avoid It
Your mindful driving challenge for February is to check out your car’s front blind zone.
Big cars feel safe to many of us, especially when we sit up higher in the driver’s seat so we can “see more.” But think about what that big hood hides! There’s a blind zone right in front of your car and the bigger your car, the bigger the blind zone. In one demonstration, 13 preschoolers sat on the ground in a line, completely invisible to the driver of a big SUV. This month we challenge you to take a minute on the weekend to check out your own car. Ask your child(ren) to stand next to your front bumper and kneel like they’re picking up a dropped cell phone. Can you see them while you sit naturally in the driver’s seat? If not, ask them to crawl forward away from the bumper until you can see them. Then step outside and see how far away they are. That’s your front blind spot that you need to be aware of when you drive up to a crosswalk.
These Challenges are brought to you by CUSD and the Cupertino Safe Routes to School Program. Check out Cupertino’s Back to School page for tips and resources on getting to school safely.

Fall 2025 Travel Tally Data Results Are In!
Data from this past Fall indicates that almost half of Cupertino school students commute by some method other than single family vehicle (yay!) and that the most popular of these alternative modes is walking, followed by biking and then carpooling. This year’s data also shows that while overall Cupertino families’ transportation choices haven’t changed drastically from previous years, this is the first year more students are biking than carpooling, with the biking rate reaching an historical high.
Other key takeaways include a city-wide increase in the rate of travel by alternative transportation in the afternoon (50%), compared to the morning (44%) at almost all schools. As usual, elementary schools have the highest overall walking rates (likely due to families living closer to school), while middle and high schools have higher rates of biking and carpooling. Public transit is used at the two high schools near a VTA bus line.
The Student Travel Tally is a yearly collaboration with the CUSD and FUHSD teachers to compile a snapshot of how students travel to and from school. This data helps us better understand citywide student transportation trends across all schools in Cupertino and all grade levels. Teachers ask their students how they are getting to and from school and then mark their responses on a questionnaire developed by the National Safe Routes to School Partnership. This data is collected on three school days in the same week.
You can check out the complete data report and our findings here.

Orange Ave Construction -
Work to relocate utility poles out of the street on Orange Avenue is progressing. The majority of the larger paving and digging work is done, but there will still be some minor trenching this spring. The next phases of the project include rewiring poles above and conduits below ground, and eventually removing the old PG&E poles. This project is set to finish in early June.
