This spring, Cupertino Safe Routes to School celebrated 10 successful program years! To mark this significant event, we hosted a party with members of our working group, program staff, and important program partners, some of whom have been working with us since the very beginning. It was humbling and meaningful for us to share time and space with community members who’ve volunteered their time, energy, and skills to our program for so long. Many of these volunteer parents continue to show up to meetings and support us even though their kids have long since graduated from the Cupertino schools!
At the party we sat together and shared potluck snacks, impactful memories of our program over the last 10 years, and a delicious anniversary ice cream cake. Attendees were invited to write down their memories as well as “wish list” ideas for our program in the next 5-10 years. We are so grateful to each person who helps makes this program happen and we look forward to it continually evolving and improving. Here’s to 10 more wonderful years!
P.S.- we are always looking for more parent volunteers to join our team. Please reach out if you’re interested. You might even get cake!

Cupertino Walk n' Roll Bingo- Success!
Last month we wrapped up our first annual Walk n’ Roll Bingo game. We’re excited to say it was a big success! This game engaged K-8 students who live in or attend schools in Cupertino to walk, bike, and roll more during the month of May to celebrate Bike Month. We challenged participants to walk or roll to local parks, schools, and community landmarks, to try walking or biking to school five days in a row, to walk or bike somewhere new, and many other activities. We’re delighted to have had participation from students in 9 different schools, with over 15 blackout entries as well as all our bingo entries. Thank you to all who participated this year, as well as to our partners at the Cupertino Library. Stay tuned for more information about next year’s Walk n Roll Bingo.

High School Reps Wrap Up Another Great Year
Cupertino Safe Routes to School is a partnership of people and organizations from around town, including students. We have two representatives at each high school who work together with their fellow students and faculty to make walking and biking to school more accessible and desirable. These reps attend all our SR2S Working Group meetings throughout the year, helping us to grow and adapt our safe routes program at the high school level. These reps are awesome.
At the end of every school year we invite these six students to come present the work they’ve done at their respective schools. Programs and projects these students lead throughout the year range from hosting group bike trains for students to school during orientation, to running bike and walk-related social media campaigns on their campuses, to working with school faculty to improve bike infrastructure and safety at their schools. This year, our reps at all three schools hosted ‘Don’t Drive for Donut’ days, rewarding students who biked to school on those days with a fresh doughnut. Between all three schools, 620 doughnuts were given out. All three schools also hosted ‘Bike Doctor’ free bike repair events for students on their campuses, and a total of 122 bikes were repaired. In addition to the work they’ve done this year, all of our reps shared exciting ideas about what to bring to our program next year, and we’re excited to see those come to fruition. Thank you, Reps!
To view these HS Rep presentations, look at the May 28th, 2025 presentations.

Sedgwick Wins County-Wide
Bike Rack Decorating Contest!
Each year, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department (SCCPHD) hosts a county-wide bike rack decorating contest open to all K-12 students in Santa Clara County. This year, we are proud to announce that Sedgwick Elementary School won the contest! The students and staff at Sedgwick came together to decorate their bike rack with an adorable marine life theme and have been rewarded with a trophy from SCCPHD and bragging rights for the next year. Students at Sedwick Elementary walk and bike regularly with robust participation in their monthly Walk n’ Roll to School day, led by the school’s Special Programs Coordinator, Patti Schmidt. We’re not surprised that this school team has won the contest, and we’re very excited for them. Great job, Sedgwick team!

Safety Tips- Stay Safe in the Summer Sun
Summer’s here and so are peak conditions for being outside and active! We hope all of you are out walking, running, scootering, and riding your bike places, and we also hope you’re taking care of your bodies and minds and staying safe. Here are three quick safety tips for being active the summer sun:
-
Wear A Helmet- If you’re out rolling on one or more wheels, wear a helmet! If you’re 18 years or younger, this is the law. If you’re over 18, we still hope you opt in for this essential safety feature. Protect your brain! You can learn more about helmet safety and other resources here.
-
Wear Sunscreen- Keep your beautiful skin protected this summer. We recommend brands with organic, reef-safe ingredients or make your own!
-
Hydrate- Remember to drink water, especially when you’re out exercising and before you feel thirsty. We all know Cupertino can get hot. Always bring a water bottle with you when you’re walking, biking, or scootering. Slip it in your backpack, cargo basket, or consider installing a water bottle cage.

The new Lawson Middle School Bikeway Project construction begins this month! This new, two-way separated bike path will provide a safe and convenient way for students to get to the campus bike cages without crossing lanes of car traffic. During the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, the sidewalks near the school are crowded with students, and the streets around the school are crowded with cars. The bike path will give cyclists a separate, dedicated space, and keep them away from cars and pedestrians. This exciting infrastructure improvement for students is the City’s first two-way, on-street separated bike path! Construction is slated to run from July 7 through July 18. You can learn more about this bikeway, as well as parking changes in the area here.

As part of the City’s recently adopted Vision Zero Action Plan, staff have launched an online collision dashboard to increase transparency and support roadway safety goals. The dashboard provides public access to data on all reported roadway collisions in Cupertino from 2018 to 2024. Updated annually, this tool helps track citywide collision trends, evaluate the effectiveness of safety improvements, and identify high-risk areas for future upgrades. It also allows users to filter by age, date, collision factor, and severity.
The dashboard is available on the City’s Vision Zero webpage: Vision Zero Action Plan and Collision Dashboard Cupertino CA.
