Student Delegation Visit from Sister City Copertino
 On Friday, May 23, the City welcomed a delegation from Copertino, Italy, comprising seven students and one chaperone. The group was warmly received at City Hall by Mayor Chao, followed by an informal conversation and a photo session at the Council dais. The visit highlighted the ongoing cultural exchange and strong ties between the two Sister Cities.

Mayor's Initiatives
 Mayor Liang Chao’s initiatives are centered on building a strong sense of community, celebrating Cupertino’s rich diversity, and fostering open dialogue between residents and local leadership. These goals are pursued through events, meaningful conversations, and storytelling.
Some upcoming events are:
- The Cupertino Community Multicultural Juried Art Show, which will take place on Saturday, May 24, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Cupertino Civic Center Plaza.
- The Tech Icon – Cupertino Stories of Entrepreneurship, scheduled for Sunday, June 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Community Hall.
- Dance at the Plaza event which will be on Sunday, June 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cupertino Civic Center Plaza.

Creek Cleanup Brings Community Together
On Saturday, May 17, the Environmental Programs and Sustainability Division hosted a cleanup site at Wilson Park for National River Cleanup Day 2025. This volunteer event is sponsored by Valley Water with cities hosting sites where the community is provided with equipment and access to a creek to remove trash and litter. The Cupertino event had 53 volunteers, including Vice Mayor Kitty Moore, scouring the dry creek beds of Regnart and Calabazas creeks. During the three hours of the event, they pulled out 260 pounds of trash, scrap metal, and recyclable containers. The next event is Coastal Clean-Up Day in September 2025. Details and location will be shared closer to the date. Thank you for helping keep our creeks clean!
Pride Month Flag Raising
In honor of Pride Month, the City will host a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, June 2, at 4 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza. The community is invited to help raise the rainbow flag, which will stay up for the rest of June.

Jollyman Park All-Inclusive Playground Reopening
Join us for the ribbon cutting of the new All-Inclusive Playground at Jollyman Park on Friday, June 13, at 1 p.m. This thoughtfully designed playground provides a welcoming, accessible space for individuals of all ages and abilities. It encourages play, recreation, and connection, regardless of physical or developmental differences. We look forward to celebrating this new addition to our community with you. Dive In! Pool Season Starts May 24 at Blackberry Farm
Pool season is almost here! The Blackberry Farm swimming pools will open for the season this Saturday, May 24. Start your day with lap swim from 9 to 9:45 a.m., then enjoy recreational swim from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cupertino Trash Rules: A Quick Guide for Residents
To keep Cupertino clean and safe, local law (CMC § 6.24) sets clear rules for trash and recycling. Here's what you need to know:
Key Guidelines

Sign Up for Service: Residents must register with the City's waste provider within 10 days of moving in (unless exempt).

Weekly Pickup: Trash must be set out at least once a week. Dry recyclables can be stored for up to a month.

Use Proper Containers:
- Only use City-provided bins.
- Keep lids closed except during use.
- Don't overfill bins and sort waste correctly.

Follow Timing Rules:
- Place bins out no more than 24 hours before or after pickup.
- If they block a bike lane, remove them within 12 hours post-service.

No Burning: Burning waste is not allowed.

Torre Avenue and Pacifica Drive Water Main Replacement Project
The City of Cupertino has started the Torre Avenue and Pacifica Drive Water Main Replacement Project, an essential infrastructure upgrade designed to replace aging water lines and enhance service reliability for residents and businesses in the area.
Construction began earlier this month and will continue in phases through June. Work will occur Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., excluding holidays and major City events.

May 12 to May 30: Final connections for domestic water, hydrants, fire services, and irrigation (13 working days)

What to Expect
Traffic and Parking Impacts: Parking along Torre Avenue will be limited during construction. Traffic control measures may lead to delays, so please plan your travel accordingly.
Service Notifications: Any scheduled water service interruptions will be communicated in advance. Notifications will be provided with at least 72 hours’ notice, including City Hall and the Cupertino Library alerts.

Join the Fun: Play Walk n' Roll Bingo!
Cupertino Safe Routes to School launched its first Walk n' Roll Bingo for kindergarten through 8th grade students, which will last until Saturday, May 31! Complete bike, walk, or scooter activities on the bingo board to win prizes. Get five in a row for a bingo prize—or complete all 25 squares for a blackout and a chance to win a raffle prize!

Help Your Teen Build Leadership Skills
Is your teen an incoming 8th to 11th grader looking for meaningful ways to get involved and grow as a leader? The Cupertino Youth Activity Board (YAB) is now accepting applications! YAB is a volunteer leadership program through Cupertino Parks and Recreation where teens plan events for their peers, give back to the community, and develop valuable life skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership.
The application deadline is Sunday, June 1, at 11:59 p.m. Apply at cupertino.gov/yab.
Staff and Volunteers Recognized at CPRS D4 Awards
At the 2025 California Parks and Recreation Society District 4 Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 8, the City of Cupertino received five honors celebrating community service and professional excellence. Teen volunteers Daniel Chu and Rayna Shah were recognized for their leadership in youth programs. Senior Center volunteers Janet Dompe and Lisa Su were honored for their dedicated service to older adults. Dominick Stuart received the Professional Merit Award for his exemplary public service and recent promotion. These awards reflect Cupertino’s deep appreciation for those who enrich the community through their service and leadership.
Live Well Age Well Health Expo
On Friday, May 9, the Cupertino Senior Center hosted their annual Live Well Age Well Health Expo, a health and wellness event for the community to learn about available health resources for older adults. With 40 resource agencies and community partners, attendees visited booths to receive information on caregiving, housing, transportation, mental wellness, and cyber and physical safety. Additionally, the event provided informational presentations and fitness demonstrations, giving those in attendance a chance to explore, learn and connect.

Coffee with a Cop “LAW-tes”
Join the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office – West Valley Patrol Division for a casual chat over coffee at the Cupertino Starbucks, 21731 Stevens Creek Boulevard, on Wednesday, May 28, from 8 to 10 a.m. Stop by to meet your local Sheriff’s Deputies, share community concerns, hear about local crime trends, or just say "hello".
Wildfire Preparedness: Attend a Workshop
Wildfire season is approaching, and the City of Cupertino and the Santa Clara County Fire Department encourages residents to prepare by attending the 2025 Wildfire Preparedness Workshops. These free events will cover the “Ready, Set, Go!” model and offer resources from local emergency agencies.

Valley Water Invites Youth to Lead
Valley Water is accepting applications for its Youth Commission, a leadership program for high school students (ages 13 to 18) in Santa Clara County. Commissioners advise the Board of Directors on water-related issues and participate in public policy, education, and outreach. The commission includes 21 students, with three representatives from each district, serving two-year terms and meeting quarterly. This is an excellent opportunity to earn volunteer hours, build leadership skills, and engage in local government. Applications are due by Friday, May 26, and can be submitted to youthcommission@valleywater.org.

Foothill Expressway Multimodal Study
The County of Santa Clara is kicking off a project to study the feasibility of adding a multi-use path for people walking, biking, and rolling along Foothill Expressway. The project aims to improve safety and mobility across approximately 10 miles of corridor from Alpine Road/Santa Cruz Avenue in San Mateo County to Cristo Rey Drive/Starling Drive. While this is not a City of Cupertino project, the Foothill Corridor is a popular route for Cupertino residents and the community is encouraged to stay informed.

District Robotics Facility Construction
Fremont Union High School District has informed the City of Cupertino that they will be building a new District Robotics Facility on the Cupertino High School campus. Construction started on Monday, May 19 and is expected to run through June 2026. The City consulted with them on traffic mitigation measures and wishes to advise residents and school families of anticipated traffic congestion on Finch Avenue in front of the school. Please plan to leave a little earlier to make it to your destinations on time.
Access to Capital Workshop for Businesses
In collaboration with the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce, Access Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and NOVAworks, the City of Cupertino co-hosted a business workshop on Thursday, May 15. The event focused on small business capital access, emerging marketplace trends, effective financial management strategies, and workforce development resources.

Get ready to press start on an epic summer of reading and adventure with our Summer Reading Program: "Level Up at Your Library!" from June 1 to July 31. We're inviting readers of all ages – kids, teens, and adults – to power up their imaginations and unlock new worlds through the magic of books.
