Bike More, Bike Smart, Bike Safe
With the arrival of warmer weather, more people are biking for commuting, exercise, and recreation. This makes it essential for all people to look out for one another and protect lives. Cupertino Safe Routes to School is encouraging everyone to bike more this month and to be alert while biking and driving to keep each other safe. “Bicycling is a great means of transportation and recreation, and everyone deserves to ride to their destination safely.”
Here are some fun and meaningful ways to participate in National Bike Safety Month in Cupertino!

Give Us Your Feedback on our Active Transportation Plan (ATP)
The City of Cupertino is developing a new Active Transportation Plan (ATP) with the goal of making it easier, safer, and more comfortable for everyone to walk or roll around town. This includes those using scooters, powerchairs, and other mobility devices. The ATP will serve as a community-driven roadmap for project delivery, identifying projects and programs that support a healthier, more accessible Cupertino.
We want to hear from you! Visit our project website to learn more and explore our interactive web map, where you can share your favorite walking and biking routes, destinations you’d like better access to, and barriers or concerns you see around the city. Please also attend one of our two community workshops next week – May 5 (online via zoom) and May 7 (in-person at Community Hall).
Your feedback will help us build a safer and more connected Cupertino for everyone. For questions or assistance, please contact info@cupertinoatp.org.

Cupertino SR2S has the following safety tips for bike month (and every month):
For Bike Riders:
- Use lights at night.
- Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic
- Always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash.
- Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
For Drivers:
- Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.
- Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.
- Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist and give them space when passing. California law requires drivers to change lanes, when possible, to pass bicyclists and always pass with at least 3 feet of space.
- Never drive distracted or impaired.

 2025 Streetlight Banner Contest Winners
Congratulations to our 2025 Streetlight Banner Contest winners, and to all who participated! We had an incredible group of submissions and choosing winners was tough. As a reminder, we invited high school students living or attending school in Cupertino to submit original art in one of four transportation categories:
- The Joys of Walking and Biking
- The Environmental Benefits of Sustainable Transportation
- SV Hopper (Silicon Valley Hopper)
- Cupertino's Vision Zero Action Plan
Look for these winning designs on streetlight poles along Torre Avenue, De Anza Boulevard, Stevens Creek Boulevard, and Stelling Road.

Happy Birthday to Us!
Last, but not least, we are celebrating our 10th birthday this month! Cupertino SR2S began as a humble pilot back in 2015, headed up by Chelsea Biklen and David Stillman. As we begin our 11th year of cooperative, collaborative walk and roll safety education and encouragement and we couldn’t be prouder. The program has seen many iterations and significant changes, and as a result it is more robust than ever. Thank you to all who have supported us in some capacity over the years. We really appreciate you! We’ll be celebrating our 10th anniversary at our last Working Group meeting of the year on May 28. If you have a special memory or photo from our SR2S program over the last 10 years, please send them to us at saferoutes@cupertino.gov before May 28.
