Get Involved This Spring
Spring is most definitely here. The sun is shining, the days are longer, and the shorts and sandals are starting to make an appearance. We live in one of the most beautiful, temperate places on earth. Now is the perfect time to start walking and rolling to school, work, or wherever! There are SO many benefits of getting to where you need to go using your feet or on people-powered wheels. It gives you time to actually experience the beauty of spring from outside the confining walls of your home, car, or office. There are flowers blooming y’all! Birds are chirping, trees are fruiting, the earth is doing its abundance dance. Don’t miss it! It’s also an easy way to knock out your daily exercise, decrease stress, improve your mental health, empower yourself, and connect with this community around you. Did you know that roughly 40% of Cupertino students live less than a mile from their school? That’s roughly a 20 min walk or just a 5-10 minute bike ride! With how long it takes to navigate school traffic and find a place to park, you'll likely save time by switching your commute to walking or biking. Try it out this season.
Keep reading for direct ways to get involved with us this Spring and increase your walking and rolling!

Participate in a Walk n' Roll Day at Your School
Are you just jonesin’ for a dedicated day to walk or bike to your school this spring? Check with your school to see if they are hosting a walk and roll day! What’s a walk and roll to school day you might ask? Check out more information here. PSA: We need parent volunteers to pull these off. If you’re willing to dedicate a morning of your time this spring to help hand out prizes to adorable children on their bikes and scooters this would be incredibly helpful. Please reach out to your school or to City SR2S staff and we can plug you in to an opportunity. Email us at saferoutes@cupertino.gov.

Is Your Student Ready?
It can be tricky to know when your child is ready to walk and bike to school for their first time.
Here is a Ten-Question Test to see if your child is ready to go to school by themselves.
We know the idea of letting your child walk or bike without you can be scary, and we want to say “good job” on giving your kids this opportunity for independence! Remember, kids are often ready to do this on their own long before parents think they are ready. You might remember your own first experiences of walking or biking to school solo and how proud they made you feel. Give your kids the same chance to prove themselves. They will thank you for it. For more resources about safe travel to/from school, check out our webpage.
