Public Review of Updated Fire Hazard Map & Wildfire Readiness Workshops
As wildfire risks continue to threaten communities across California, preparedness is more crucial than ever. To help residents stay proactive in protecting their homes and families, we have two important updates for you:
Public Review of Updated Fire Hazard Map for Cupertino – Your Input Needed
CAL FIRE has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps to improve wildfire preparedness across California. These revised Local Response Area (LRA) maps now include an additional 1.4 million acres in high and very high fire hazard zones statewide.
LRA maps identify properties in moderate, high, and very high fire hazard severity zones. Each designation is determined based on consistent statewide criteria, including factors such as fuel loading, slope, fire weather, and other relevant considerations. The City of Cupertino is required to adopt an Ordinance consistent with these designations.

Cupertino participates in FEMA's voluntary Community Rating System (CRS) Program, which allows residents and business owners to save money on flood insurance. By improving flood risk management, the city qualifies for discounts on insurance premiums. Recently, Cupertino completed a comprehensive five-year review with FEMA, which assessed the city's flood management practices. As a result of these efforts, Cupertino's rating improved from Class 7 to Class 6, leading to even greater savings for the community. Starting October 1, property owners in special flood hazard areas (SFHAs) will receive a 20% discount on flood insurance, while those located outside these areas will enjoy a 10% discount.
