Recap- 'Q & A' with the Santa Clara County Sherriff's Traffic Deputies
Our February Working Group meeting featured an extended question and answer session with the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff's Traffic Unit Enforcement Division. This was our chance to connect and ask questions of our local traffic deputies. Our questions ranged from logistics of deputy count and deployment strategies to specifics about new laws and how they are enforced, and much more. Perhaps the most interesting conversation was in response to our question of “what are the worst biking, walking, and driving behaviors you observe here in Cupertino?”
The most common behaviors they cited were:
-
Drivers: Frequent U-turns within 200 ft. of an approaching vehicle in a residential district
-
Bicyclists: Not stopping at STOP signs
-
Pedestrians: Parents with children crossing the street in front of cars with no crosswalk even when there is a crosswalk nearby
The session was extensive and thorough. We are so grateful to the deputies for their time and energy, both at the meeting and out on the streets every day.

What is California's new 'Daylighting' law (AB 413)?
Assembly Bill (AB) 413 went into effect statewide on January 1, 2025. This law prohibits stopping or parking within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Along with the added subsection N, the law also prohibits stopping or parking within 15 feet of a crosswalk where a curb extension is present. The purposes of this law are to improve visibility at intersections for pedestrians and drivers and make crosswalks safer for people walking by removing visual obstructions, all to help prevent traffic crashes and save lives. As our deputies shared in the aforementioned ‘Q & A’ session, enforcement will start to increase as the year progresses. To avoid breaking this law and receiving a citation, leave 20 feet between your vehicle and any crosswalk, watch for updated curb markings and signs, avoid parking within the restricted zones, and spread the word to neighbors, friends, and visitors. For more information about this law, check out this article from Walk Bike Cupertino.

Safety Tip- Daylight Savings Return!
On March 9, 2025 we spring forward and wake up one hour earlier in the morning. This change happens at exactly 2 AM local time, when it will suddenly become 3 AM! With this change comes a spring forward in time and a spring back in amount of morning daylight. Please be prepared - whether you are walking, rolling, or driving - for it to be darker and for visibility to be more challenging during early morning travel and school/work commutes. If you are walking and rolling, use more lights on your person and bike and wear bright colors! If you are driving, be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists you may have a harder time seeing.
