Wildfire Preparedness
While wildfires are rare in winter, disasters like the Palisades Fire and the other Southern California fires remind us that emergencies can happen at any time. Preparedness is key to protecting our families, homes, and businesses.
What can you do today?
-
Create an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like food, water, and important documents.
-
Defensible Space: Clear brush and debris to protect your property.
-
Stay Informed:
-
Ready. Set. Go - Santa Clara County Fire Department – Being ready for wildfire starts with maintaining an adequate defensible space and by hardening your home.
- Cupertino Office of Emergency Management – Sign up to receive SCC Alerts, find local evacuation routes and maps, understand the main hazards in Cupertino and more.
-
Preparedness Resources – Download preparedness information for your household, don’t forget about pets!
-
Public Hazard Awareness Dashboard—The dashboard collects data from various public sources, including weather reports, fire reports, environmental sensors, and incident logs. It is a one-stop shop for proactive decision-making and effective response before and during emergencies.
-
Home Ignition Zone Assessment – SCCFSC offers Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessments for individual homeowners. A trained representative from the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council will come to your home and walk your property with you for 60 minutes.
-
National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise USA - the program teaches communities how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action to prevent losses. SCCFSC offers workshops and guidance for neighborhoods and communities that want to become Firewise USA® recognized.
- Know Your Evacuation Zone - Genasys Protect, formerly known as Zonehaven provides specific, timely, and accurate information regarding evacuations. Visit the Genasys website today, record your evacuation zone, and return anytime to view evacuation orders, warnings or other advisories.
- Santa Clara County Fire Department partners with the city and its residents annually to send notices to properties located in the Wildland Urban Interface. These notices provide details on safety requirements – we urge homeowners to pay attention when these notices arrive and follow the safety actions outlined within. Please respond using the QR code provided for your property.
- Santa Clara County Fire implements the Fire Code for the community's safety. However, as you embark on home improvements, consider going beyond the fire code. There is no such thing as being fireproof. However, there are new products on the market worth exploring. Consider metal roofs and other fire-resistant materials and design elements. Alternatives to wood siding are fire-resistant gypsum boards with a high fire rating. Dual or triple-pane windows can reduce heat transfer from exterior flames. Wood shake roofs should be replaced with roof materials like metal, slate, or concrete tiles. Fire-rated vents will help prevent embers and heat from entering the attic space. Explore the various methods of hardening your home against wildfire.
Preparedness is a shared responsibility—let’s keep Cupertino safe, every season.
