We're starting off our newsletter this month with a reminder that we are actively accepting applications for our 2025 Streetlight Banner Art Contest! Are you a high school student in Cupertino with a passion for art? Here's your chance to showcase your creativity to the entire Cupertino community. We're inviting any and all students living in or attending a high school in Cupertino to create banner art that will promote the following key City transportation themes/programs:
- The Joys of Walking and Biking
- Walk & Roll to School Events
- The Environmental Benefits of Sustainable Transportation
- Silicon Valley (SV) Hopper
- Cupertino’s Vision Zero Action Plan
Winning designs will be displayed on streetlights along DeAnza Boulevard, Stevens Creek Boulevard, Torre Avenue, and Stelling Road. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public art while encouraging sustainable transportation. Submit your designs by February 28, 2025 to have a shot at seeing your artwork brighten up our city streets. Read more and submit your entry here.

Fall 2024 Student Travel Tally Results |
|
|
Last November, our team collaborated with our CUSD and FUHSD teachers to complete Cupertino's yearly survey on how students travel to and from school. We've been running this survey since 2015, and the data helps us better understand citywide student transportation trends across all grade levels. We collect this data using an in-class survey where teachers ask their students how they are traveling to and from school and then mark their responses on a questionnaire developed by the National Safe Routes to School Partnership. This data is collected on three school days in the same week.
Data from this fall shows us that approximately half of Cupertino families use alternative transportation to get to school (walking, biking, scootering, busing, or carpooling). While this year does not show a big change from previous years, we do notice some exciting mode shift changes including:
- An increase in the alternative transportation rate in the afternoon (49%) as compared to the morning (42%)
- An increase in Cupertino high school students utilizing our on-demand microtransit service, SV Hopper
- A steady increase in citywide carpool rates post COVID-19
We also celebrate the effectiveness of regular Walk n' Roll to School events. Sedgwick Elementary has a monthly Walk n' Roll day, which happened on the Wednesday of our data collection week. Their walking and rolling rates that day were 3% higher than the other two days that week!
You can check out the complete data report and our findings here.

February Mindful Driving Reminder- Yield to Emergency Vehicles!
If you encounter an ambulance or fire truck with flashing lights and sirens on the road, immediately pull over to the right-most edge of the roadway and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.
Here's the breakdown of what to do:
1) Yield the right-of-way: California law requires you to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles approaching with their lights and sirens on.
2) Pull over to the right: Safely pull over to the right-most edge of the road, clear of any intersections, and come to a complete stop.
3) Stay stopped until they pass: Remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed and it is safe to proceed.
4) Avoid stopping in intersections: Do not stop in an intersection, even if you are trying to yield to an emergency vehicle. Pull forward out of the intersection and then stop.
5) If on a highway: If you are on a freeway or a highway, safely move to the right lane and pull over to the right shoulder.
These rules apply to cyclists as well. Let's work together to help keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles. In an emergency like a heart attack or a fire, seconds can save a life!

Active Transportation Plan (ATP) Update
The development of Cupertino's first Active Transportation Plan (ATP) is scheduled to begin this month. The Plan will incorporate past efforts like the 2024 Vision Zero Plan, 2016 Bicycle Transportation Plan, and 2018 Pedestrian Transportation Plan. However, it will be distinct in focusing on infrastructure, community engagement, funding strategies, and public outreach. The final plan will serve as a guiding master document, unifying safety priorities with infrastructure and policy frameworks to make active transportation more convenient and enjoyable for Cupertino residents.
Visit the City's project page to learn more about the ATP.
