Happy Holidays and Welcome 2025!

|
Happy New Year! Sending a warm-hearted message of gratitude for all your support and participation in our Safe Routes to School program this past year.
Some key program highlights of 2024:
- We bid a bittersweet farewell to our former program coordinator, Cherie Walkowiak, and wish her the best in her new chapter!
- We welcomed Chelsea Biklen, our previous SR2S coordinator, back to the team!
- The 2024 Fall Bike Fest was enormously successful, with more participants than ever before!
- The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) awarded Cupertino a generous grant to support our robust walk and roll safety education in schools.
- Cupertino’s first Vision Zero Action Plan was unanimously adopted by the City Council.
- The City Council also unanimously approved moving forward with implementation of the Lawson Middle School Bikeway project.
2025 begins the 10th year of our Safe Routes to School Program here at the City of Cupertino, and we could not do it without the efforts and support of community members just like you! We hope you're all enjoying a beautiful holiday season with loved ones, and that you walk and roll into this new year with ease. We look forward to what's to come.

New City Website is Live!
New year, new website! City of Cupertino’s website has moved from .org to .gov. What does this mean? Most of our SR2S program pages can still be found using their existing links and Cupertino.org/saferoutes will automatically route you to our new homepage. However, if you do find yourself having a hard time finding some of our pages, try searching from our new homepage Cupertino.gov/saferoutes, or contacting us for further support.

Mindful Driving
Your mindful driving challenge for January is to play Spot the Backpack on your way to school.
The holidays are nearly over and while we may be physically back at work or school, our brains are still playing catch up from the holidays. We may be going through our routines in a thick fog of eggnog and post-New Years celebrations, not really paying attention to anything. This month’s challenge is a game to snap us back to the here and now.
The rules to Spot the Backpack are: everyone in the car picks a different color as they get in the car and buckle up. You then watch for anyone wearing that color backpack on the way to school. When you spot one in your color, you get to yell “spotted!” What do you win? The sweet satisfaction of knowing your present in your body and able to navigate the road safely.
