SR2S Receives $160,000 Grant for Education
We’re excited to announce that Cupertino Safe Routes to School has received a $160,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to enhance our Bicycle and Pedestrian Education Program! The grant, which provides funding through September 2025, will promote safe practices for pedestrians and bicyclists and emphasize the drivers’ responsibility to look out for the other people using roads and paths.
Grant funds will support various activities focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety:
- Pedestrian training courses that educate youth on safe walking behaviors
- Bicycle training courses that educate youth on safe riding behaviors
- Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets to children in need
- Community and school education presentations
This grant is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An Important Recap of Our Educational Programming
Cupertino SR2S aims to normalize active transportation as a method of school travel. We believe in the potency of focusing our education and behavior change efforts on younger populations, since habits set early in life tend to continue. As such, we have been working diligently since 2020 to create a robust bicycle and pedestrian education program for Cupertino elementary and middle school students. We are proud to share that each year we offer four different pedestrian and bike safety education programs for Kinders, 2nd graders, 4th graders, and 6th graders! The kinder and 2nd grade classes receive pedestrian education in the form of in-class presentations and a walking fieldtrip, and our 4th and 6th graders receive bicycle safety education- both in the classroom and out on their bikes. In this way, students get to experience the teachings both cognitively and in their bodies in real time! These education programs are offered every year for our schools, and we have been steadily increasing the number of students reached each year with this material (see below for the numbers). Our ultimate goal is to offer education for every grade K-8, and in the meantime we are excited that our students are receiving this education at least every two years. These education programs are primarily grant-funded, and we are very grateful to our funders: VTA’s 2016 Measure B and the California Office of Traffic Safety.

December Mindful Driving Challenge- See and Be Seen!
Your mindful driving challenge for December is to clean your car windows, lights, and mirrors whenever you get gas.
Time just changed so daylight is getting shorter and it’s dark longer. We all know how hard it is to see a person in the road dressed in dark clothing at night. But do we think about how it’s equally hard to see a car whose lights are all covered in dirt and grime? This month, we challenge you to take off your car’s black hoodie by wiping off your headlights and taillights the next time you’re at the gas station. And while you’re at it, take off the car’s sunglasses too by cleaning the windshield and re-adjusting your mirrors (here’s a great video on how to adjust your mirrors to eliminate blind spots). See and be seen again!
Check out Cupertino’s Back to School page for more tips and resources on getting to school safely.
