The Family Fun Ride on its way to Wilson Park for the Scavenger Hunt
Safe Routes to School celebrated another successful Cupertino Fall Bike Festival last Saturday September 28th! The 11th annual event saw many exciting returning events, booths, and organizations and welcomed in many new activities and personnel. Along with a plaza full of 30 different bike-related activities and organizations, the bike fest featured two community rides this year. The 10-mile Park Tour Ride, led by the Black Mountain Composite high school mountain biking team (BMC), featured a tour of 11 of Cupertino’s parks and green spaces and had nearly 90 riders! The Family Fun Ride, led by Bicycle Solutions, featured a 2.5 mile loop and a scavenger hunt in Wilson Park. This ride had closer to 180 riders, including kids as young as 3 years old riding their own bikes. In total, almost 550 people attended the Bike Fest!
Other highlights of the event included a bike rodeo by Safe Moves, on-bike skills games by the BMC, bike-powered spin art and smoothie making stations, and a speech by Mayor Mohan. We want to give a shout out to the four student groups that came out to participate - Eco Valley, Tino Eco, Saratoga Bike Club, and Active Circle. Special thanks go to all council members and commissioners who attended the event. Finally, we are grateful to all our volunteers and community members who turned out in droves to support cycling in Cupertino. We look forward to the next one!

Welcome Back, Chelsea!
Cupertino SR2S welcomes back a familiar face- Chelsea Biklen! Chelsea created and piloted the Cupertino Safe Routes program back in 2015, developing it from its infancy into a city-wide program. After taking some time for herself to travel and explore, Chelsea has returned to the team. We are thrilled to welcome her back as the part-time SR2S coordinator, and are excited to share with her the program’s evolution and new facets. We’re entering into this school year with a solid safe routes crew and look forward to what we can create together.

October Mindful Driving Challenge
Superglue Hands
Our mindful driving challenge for you this month is to play Superglue Hands while driving to school – both your hands must remain on the steering wheel at all times while the car is in gear.
We live in a busy world where multi-tasking is considered a valuable skill. But no matter how good our brains might be at doing two things at once, our eyes can only look at one thing at a time. Reading the cell phone while driving, lifting a cup of coffee in front of our face to take a sip, turning around to make sure our children are buckled in the back seat … all these things take our eyes away from the road and the kindergartener who might be running after his bouncing ball. This month we challenge you to “superglue” your hands to the steering wheel while driving to school every day to remind yourself to keep looking at the road ahead. The rules of the game? While the car engine is on, the glue only releases your hands to work the turn signals, windshield wipers, and manual shifter. Your kids are your challenge monitors and may levy a fine every time you let go. Good luck!
These Challenges are brought to you by the Cupertino Safe Routes to School Program. Check out Cupertino’s ‘Back to School’ page for tips and resources on getting to school safely.
