New sneakers and backpacks will once again soon be accompanying kids as they head to school for another exciting year of learning! And that learning starts before they even get to the classroom, with their choices on how to get to school. Walking or biking to school teaches students map reading skills, fosters their independence, gets them some exercise so they can sit still and concentrate better in class, encourages them to make new friends, and even helps save the planet. And as an added bonus, parents don’t need to spend an hour of their day idling in school commute traffic!
The Safe Routes to School team here in Cupertino has gathered some resources to prepare for an adventure of walking or biking or carpooling to school. Everything from Suggested Routes to School maps, to tips on what to wear to help stay safe, to guidelines for deciding when kids are ready for the independence of getting to school on their own. Check it out!
Avoid the Rush
Sometimes keeping yourself and everyone else on the road safer is just a matter of scheduling your day a little bit differently. For 20 minutes every morning, normally quiet streets suddenly become a Mad Max landscape of cars and bikes and pedestrians. The craziness only lasts for a very brief, specific time though. If you live near a school or along a major school commute route, it’s sometimes best to just plan your schedule to avoid those 20 minutes.
K – 8th grade will start August 15 CUSD (Cupertino Union School District) Bell Schedules
High School classes will start August 19 FUHSD (Fremont Union High School District) Bell Schedules

There's still time to sign up for a Middle School Bike Skills Clinic!
These workshops are designed for students who will be in middle school this fall. They prepare students to ride to school and beyond with lessons on the rules of the road, bike handling skills drills, and a neighborhood bike ride to tie all the lessons together.
Give your student (and yourself!) the gift of independence through bike safety. There are a few more openings left on both August 11 and August 18, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Cupertino Senior Center. Learn more and register here:

In-School Traffic Safety Education
How to stay safe while walking and biking on city streets is a life skill, just like math and reading. So the Cupertino Safe Routes to School team is partnering with Cupertino schools to bring traffic safety education to students. We’ll be offering pedestrian safety training to all Kindergarteners and 2nd graders this year and bicycle safety training to all 4th graders and middle school students. These programs are scheduled through the schools. Please contact your school office if you’d like to know the schedule or help out.

Vision Zero
On July 9, in a unanimous City council vote, the City of Cupertino officially adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan. This Plan will guide policies and programs with the ambitious long term goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on Cupertino roadways.
Vision Zero programs prioritize safety over other transportation goals, acknowledge that traffic fatalities and serious injuries are preventable, and incorporate a multidisciplinary Safe System approach. The City of Cupertino Vision Zero Plan strives to improve safety for everyone moving about the City, whether walking, biking, driving or riding transit. It also aims to improve safety at the identified high-injury locations.
