Calling All High School Students!
Student Representatives Needed
Will you be a student at Homestead, Monta Vista, or Cupertino High School next school year? Would you like to foster sustainable transportation at your school? Do you have ideas about how to encourage your fellow students to consider ditching the car drop-off line and consider walking, biking, taking transit, or carpooling? Do you wish more people understood the transportation challenges of people in wheelchairs?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, we encourage you to apply to be part of the Cupertino Safe Routes to School Working Group! Two students will be selected from each of the three high schools above, and we've already started receiving applications!
Applications are due Sunday, April 21
Cupertino Safe Routes to School's mission is to create a safer environment for students and families in Cupertino to travel to and from school actively. Since students are the real change-makers on high school campuses, we'd love to work with you towards this mission at your school!!!

Bike Rack Decorating Contest
Turn your ordinary bike racks into something extraordinary
Take part in the countywide Bike Rack Decorating Contest!
Santa Clara County invites Elementary, Middle, and High Schools to participate in their Bike Rack Decorating Contest in celebration of Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 8th!
Students: let your creative talents guide you in decorating your school’s bike racks and compete against schools across the county.
The first 20 schools to register will receive a decorating starter kit. If you receive a starter kit, you can use those supplies plus any additional materials to decorate your bike rack(s). Be creative, and let your imagination create a bike rack masterpiece.
Contest rules:
-
Register your school (K-12) by May 3, 2024. Registration opens April 15.
- Decorate your school bike rack(s) at least one time from April 22 through May 10.
- Submit at least one photo of your decorated bike rack by May 10 by emailing: martha.lara@phd.sccgov.org.
- Adults, be sure to have students actively involved with the bike rack decorating.
A panel of judges and bicycle enthusiasts will select a winner. The winning school will be announced on May 16th and will receive the Golden Bike Award (a perpetual trophy) and bragging rights until next year’s competition.
Registration Opens April 15 and Closes May 3

Community Meeting
Homestead Road Corridor Safe Routes to School Improvement Project
Map shows the extents of the Homestead Road Safe Routes to School Project
COMMUNITY MEETING
Join VTA (the Valley Transit Authority) on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 North Stelling Rd., Cupertino, CA 95014. VTA Staff will present the project's design (currently at 35% completion) and provide exhibits for the public to view and provide comments.
Registration is requested but not required.
BACKGROUND
Homestead Road is an important east-west roadway within Santa Clara County that connects four jurisdictions and three schools. The Homestead Road Safe Routes to School Improvements Project will upgrade pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure on 1.5 miles of Homestead Road (Foothill Expressway to Hollenbeck Avenue/Stelling Road) in Los Altos, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Unincorporated Santa Clara County.
The project improves safety for students who walk and bike to West Valley Elementary School, Cupertino Middle School, and Homestead High School. The project was initiated at the behest of community members who were concerned about the conditions for student bicyclists and pedestrians. A feasibility study conducted in 2019 found locations within the project area to have higher concentrations of collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Of 21 collisions reported between 2015 and 2019, more than half involved school children.
