Bike Repairs
It might be rainy and cold now, but spring sunshine is on its way. And what better use for these winter days than to learn how to fix your own bike? Two organizations attended the Safe Routes to School Working Group meeting this month to highlight the various learning opportunities they offer.
Silicon Valley Bike Exchange (aka BikeX) has a mission to provide bikes to those who need them. They accept donations of old bikes, use a small army of volunteers to repair them, sell the high value ones to fund the operations, and donate the rest to local riders in need of a bike. As part of that process, there are opportunities for bike drives, bike repair clinics, and learning how to repair your own bike. If you’re interested in setting up an event for your school or team, contact BikeX directly. They also have drop in bike repair sessions on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at their bike shop at 3961 East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto. Come learn how to fix your own bike and then spread the wealth by helping fix bikes for others!

Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (aka SVBC) has a mission to build healthier and more equitable communities by making bicycling safe and accessible for everyone. They envision a community that values, includes, and encourages bicycling for all purposes for all people. Their overarching goal is to increase the number and diversity of people using bicycles for everyday transportation. In addition to all their advocacy work, they also offer a whole host of different classes - everything from learning how to ride a two-wheeler, to biking safely in traffic, to bike repair. These are all open to the public and many are free as they're funded through grants from VTA and Measure B. See their list of classes here.

Biking Buds App
Once your bike is all ready, it’s time to think about your support network on the ride. What if you get a flat tire or take a wrong turn or miss the meetup with your friends? A new app developed by one of Cupertino’s very own Monta Vista High School students can help you out. It lets you know where your friends are in real time, send messages to the entire group, and even helps plan ride routes. A new feature uses your phone to detect if you've had a fall and will automatically contact your group and emergency contacts so help will be on the way. Get the app at the Apple App Store and join over 1000 users across 5 countries in a safer, more worry-free ride experience!

SV Hopper now goes to
Santa Clara!
SV Hopper is a convenient app-based ride-share program that provides low-cost transportation anywhere within the service area. Thanks to a generous grant from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), the City of Cupertino is now partnering with the City of Santa Clara to provide seamless EV service throughout both cities. The Mountain View and Sunnyvale Caltrain stations and El Camino Hospital are additional pickup/drop off locations. This expanded service began in October, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 20.
To ride, download the app (use the QR code below, or search the App Store or Google Play). Create an account and you are ready to ride! Students, seniors, disabled and low income riders ride for only $1.75 (see the "Fares" section of the website for more details). Those without smartphones can sign-up for an account and request rides by phone (669) 201-1892.

McClellan Road Upgrades
Inch by inch and row by row, we’re going to make the McClellan bike lane grow! Phase 3 of the McClellan Road Separated Bike Lane Project concentrates on the intersection of DeAnza Boulevard and McClellan Road / Pacifica Drive. It includes:
- Relocation of traffic signal mast arm poles
- Adjustment of vehicle movements to accommodate bicycle facilities
- Installation of a pedestrian crosswalk across De Anza Blvd on the south side of the intersection
- Relocation of adjacent public utilities
Construction began the week of January 29 and will last approximately four months, assuming no unanticipated delays. Traffic in all directions is expected to be maintained during construction, but motorists can expect minor delays. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Bollinger Road Corridor Safety Study
In 2020, the Cities of Cupertino and San Jose identified a list of potential improvements along Bollinger Road from De Anza Boulevard to Lawrence Expressway. Since then, they’ve been diligently searching for funding to continue the project. It all paid off this year, as it resulted in a $500K grant from the US Dept of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads for All program to continue the engineering and planning work! Congratulations to the Cupertino Public Works team!
