Santa uses Sign Language to Fulfill Christmas Wishes
The spirit of the holidays was fully displayed at the Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department Signing Santa event, a special meet-and-greet for deaf and hard-of-hearing children to share their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus using American Sign Language (ASL). Since 2019, City Accounting Technician Zeng Wang has been the City's 'Signing Santa.' Over the years, Zeng has visited with hundreds of children who communicate using ASL; for many of these children, this is the first time they've been able to share their wish list with Santa. Thank you to Zeng for making this wonderful event possible. Cupertino looks forward to hosting this event every year. Signing Santa will return in December 2024.

New Bike Lanes on Cristo Rey Drive
In partnership with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MidPen), the City of Cupertino Public Works Department recently completed installation of new bike lanes on Cristo Rey Drive. The new Class II bike lanes provide City residents and visitors with a new bike facility and improved access to Rancho San Antonio Preserve, the Forum, and properties of the Oak Valley neighborhood.
The Cristo Rey bike lane improvements were identified in Cupertino’s 2016 Bicycle Transportation Plan, as well as recommended in MidPen’s Multimodal Access Plan for Rancho San Antonio. This implementation will encourage more sustainable transportation to the preserve, reduce parking demand, and provide an opportunity for both agencies to complete the project through a cost-sharing proposal.
Leading the design effort, City staff sought feedback from the Cupertino Bicycle Pedestrian Commission and received City Council approval of the cost-sharing agreement shortly after. In November, the City’s contractor began laying out the new improvements. The project was substantially completed in early December.
