City of Cupertino Issues Proclamation Reinforcing City’s Commitment to Oppose All Forms of Discrimination
CUPERTINO, CA – The Cupertino City Council reaffirmed the City’s commitment to oppose all forms of discrimination following a meeting where the Council received input from the community regarding Senate Bill (SB) 403, a bill pending in the State Legislature that seeks to add caste to list of characteristics that are protected by state anti-discrimination law.
On behalf of the City Council, Mayor Hung Wei issued a proclamation reaffirming the City’s commitment to oppose discrimination in all forms, and to oppose any law that could result in racial or ethnic profiling or contribute to the stigmatization or stereotyping of any group by using terms with negative connotations such as the term “caste.” This proclamation reinforces the City’s commitment to diversity and respect for the rights of every individual and every community.
"As a majority-Asian American community with a large Indian American population, the City of Cupertino has a responsibility to speak out against any law that could appear to unfairly single out a single community for disparate treatment,” said Vice Mayor Sheila Mohan. “I appreciate my colleagues’ support for a strong statement opposing discrimination in all forms, and I want to thank the many members of the public who provided comments on SB 403.”
