One parent or guardian is required to attend with each student. Student and guardian both need to bring a bike and helmet.
As children enter middle school, they are developmentally ready to spread their wings of independence and get places like school on their own, but still need to learn how to keep themselves safe on the road. Also, middle school is often farther from home than a student’s local neighborhood elementary school, so they may need to cross bigger roads and ride in more traffic.
Middle School Bike Skills is a one-day bike workshop that prepares students to ride to middle school. Participants will learn how to become confident riders by learning the rules of the road and how to avoid common crashes, practicing bike handling skills, and putting it all into practice during a group neighborhood ride.
Give your child (and yourself!) the gift of independence this summer through bike safety skills. It's best to sign up four weeks in advance to receive instructions on how to prepare your bikes for the workshop. Learn more and sign up at:
Program brought to you by Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SR2S) in collaboration with Wheel Kids.
Scholarships are available upon request and are funded by VTA's 2016 Measure B and Wheel Kids

Safety Tips
Is your bike ready for summer? Find out by doing the ABC Quick Check. Check out our award-winning video The ABC Quick Check or read the summary below.
|
|
A is for Air: Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Squeeze each tire. If they give under your squeeze, inflate them until firm. If you have a pump with a gauge, pump your tires to the pressure (PSI) indicated on the side of your tire.
B is for Brakes: Make sure your brakes are working. While standing on the ground, pull your brake levers. You should not be able to roll the bike forward or backward with the brakes applied. If there is less than a thumb's width between your brake lever and handlebar when you squeeze the lever, your brakes need to be adjusted. Also make sure the brakes do not rub on your wheel when not applied. If your brakes need adjusting and you don't know how to do it, take it to a mechanic.
C is for Chain: Your chain should be oiled and not rusty or dirty. Pull on your cranks to ensure they are secure to the frame. Tighten the bolt if they are loose.
Quick is for quick releases: Some bikes use a quick release to secure the wheel or seat to the frame. Make sure your quick releases are tight. When you close them tightly, they will leave an indentation in your palm.
Check is for Checking everything is in working order: Take your bike for a brief test ride to ensure everything is in working order and there are no unusual sounds.

Library/Safe Routes to School Challenges
June - July
Libraries across Santa Clara County host reading challenges every summer, giving kids and adults alike the chance to earn badges for reading books and completing activities. This year's theme is "Find Your Voice!" Anyone who reads 5 books and completes one activity earns a prize.
The Santa Clara County Library District is partnering with City and County Safe Routes to School programs to include new Safe Routes to School challenges in their summer reading program. You can earn a Safe Routes to School Activity badge (pictured above) through this program by checking out traffic safety resources, printing out a safety tip bookmark, learning about Santa Clara County's Safe Routes to School program, or watching a video with tips on how to bike safely.
Challenges are open through the end of July on the Library's Summer Reading Challenge page. To earn your Safe Routes badge, you'll need to register for Beanstack:
Santa Clara County Library District's Summer Reading Challenge
Once you have logged into Beanstack, find the Safe Routes to School Challenge by clicking the "Log Reading and Activities" button at the top of the page and then "Complete an Activity."
Happy Summer Reading!

Lawson Bikeway Feasibility Study
The City of Cupertino continues to conduct a feasibility study to develop alternatives for a bikeway to Lawson Middle School. During the community meeting in March, they received valuable input which enabled them to narrow three design alternatives down to two.
These two options were presented to the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission in May as part of the Lawson Bikeway Feasibility Study. Alternative A is a two-way, mixed-use trail which would replace the existing sidewalk along Vista Drive. Alternative B would create an on-street two-way class IV bike Facility on the Lawson side of Vista Drive. The table highlights some of the relevant details about each option.
The Commission is recommending that City Council direct Staff to move forward with Alternative B. Staff will bring this to Council in the coming months.
The presentation made to the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission and more detail about the project can be found on the website.
