Construction Resumes at Vallco Mall Site
Earlier this week, construction began at the former Vallco Mall site. The developer and Vallco Property Owner, LLC, announced that with the successful completion of the demolition phase on the property west of Wolfe Road, the next phase of the construction process was ready to begin.
The developers have been working with the County of Santa Clara Department of Environmental Health (DEH) with the main goal of effectively identifying, assessing, and planning for the removal of any contaminated soils.
The proposed construction activities have been limited to the soil removal phase and will adhere to comprehensive environmental standards and regulations. The developers have engaged with licensed contractors who are certified in dealing with hazardous material handling and disposal.
This phase of the project is anticipated to conclude this summer and will include the following work:
- excavation and off-haul of impacted soil to appropriate waste disposal facilities, as approved by DEH
- real time air monitoring of dust generated by onsite soil removal by environmental professionals
- construction activities in accordance with provisions of the City’s Municipal Code, which limit temporary construction work to daytime hours (7 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Monday through Friday (no work for this phase will take place on weekends)
- no street closures or traffic impacts to any businesses or residences
After this phase is completed, the developers will be prepared to resume additional work at a later date, such as utility improvement work and excavation for the underground parking facility.

Memorial Park Project wins Project of the Year Award
The City of Cupertino has been selected as the winner of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Silicon Valley Project of the Year Award. This year, the Memorial Park Ponds Repurposing project won the award for costing under $2 million. The final construction cost was $1.68 million, which allowed the project to qualify for this award.
The Memorial Park Ponds Repurposing project removed the concrete liner for the old ponds, which have been drained since 2013 in response to drought restrictions. The City replaced the ponds with usable green space, planted garden areas, and did some minor paving to allow residents to walk through the area. In addition, the irrigation system was upgraded and modified to facilitate better water usage.
