Budget Town Hall Meeting is May 18

The City of Cupertino is holding a Budget Town Hall meeting to inform the community about the City’s financial outlook and to discuss potential budget-balancing strategies. Join City staff on Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the City’s financial standing and to give us your input.

You can also provide your input through the Community Budget Survey. Tell us where you would prefer to see services reduced or not, and revenue strategies you would like to see the City pursue. The survey is open through Wednesday, May 31 and preliminary responses submitted through May 16 will be shared during the City Council Special Meeting on May 17.

2023 CREST Awards Ceremony 

Each year, the City of Cupertino presents its CREST Awards to honor the outstanding contributions of Cupertino community members. The public is invited to the annual awards ceremony and reception on Thursday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Cupertino Community Hall. The event is free to the public and food will be served.

Cupertino Medical Reserve Corps Exercise

The Cupertino Office of Emergency Management and the Citizen Corps Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) will hold a medical treatment area exercise on Saturday, May 20 at Creekside Park. Residents are invited to attend this exercise from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Participating residents will receive patients with simulated injuries from the field, conduct assessments on patients, provide treatment, and communicate with Cupertino’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Exercise timeline: 

• 8 a.m.: Drill begins
• 8:30 a.m.: Citizen Corps and exercise participants arrive
• 8:45 a.m.: Safety briefing and team assignment
• 9 a.m.: Patients briefed and ready to go to treatment area
• 11 a.m.: Citizen Corps completes medical treatment exercise, starts demobilization
• 11:30 a.m.: End the drill and conduct debrief

This exercise will test the capabilities of the Citizen Corps MRC to supplement the existing emergency medical services system and the public health system.

Blackberry Farm Now Open through Summer 

Blackberry Farm is now open for the summer season. Picnic sites are open and available to be reserved for your next group gathering. The pools at Blackberry Farm will open starting on May 27 for weekend recreation swim, and will be open on May 29 for Memorial Day.

Middle School Bike Skills Workshop

Registration is open for summer bike safety workshops in Cupertino. Workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cupertino Senior Center. 

Workshop dates are:

• Sunday, June 11
• Saturday, June 24
• Sunday, July 16
• Sunday, August 6
• Saturday, August 26

These workshops are designed for students who will be in middle school this fall. They prepare students to ride to school and beyond with a crash course on the rules of the road, bike handling skills drills, and a neighborhood bike ride to tie all the lessons together. A guardian is expected to attend the class and bike along with the student.

Notable City Events

Environmental Recycling Event Recap

The Environmental Recycling Day and Shred It Event was held on Saturday, April 22 at De Anza College Parking Lot A, serving 422 City residents for drop off of unwanted materials and secure shredding of documents. Residents dropped off 4,280 pounds of donatable materials (furniture, clothes, and small appliances) which were donated to Hope Services. More than 1,000 pounds of yard trimmings were collected in addition to construction debris and electronic waste.

The City of Cupertino, in partnership with Recology, holds this event to offer City residents an opportunity to shred confidential documents, drop off other unwanted materials for responsible reuse, and recycling for no charge. The City thanks Recology's operations and customer service staff for facilitating and the team of drivers.

The next Environmental Recycling Day event is scheduled for September 9 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Live Well Age Well Health Expo 

Join the Cupertino Senior Center for the Live Well Age Well Health Expo on Friday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about resources for community members 50 and older. The event will include informational booths, educational sessions, information on community and health resources, and fitness demonstrations.

The first 100 participants will receive a free health box lunch with additional giveaways. Box lunches will be sold for $5 while supplies last. The expo is open to the public.

Community Creek Cleanup at Regnart Creek

Be the solution to water pollution and sign up for National River Cleanup Day, an international day of action to protect our creeks, rivers, and wildlife from trash and debris. The City of Cupertino is hosting a community creek cleanup on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at Regnart Creek. 

Gloves, trash grabbers, and other tools will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water to stay hydrated and to dress for safety by wearing closed toe shoes, long sleeves, long pants, and sunscreen.

Cupertino Café Returns Next Week

On Saturday, May 20 from 2 to 8 p.m., the City invites all teens to the semi-annual Cupertino Café at Community Hall. The Cupertino Café is the perfect location for students to study and prepare for final exams. There will be free snacks, beverages, and Panda Express. Attendees can rest with one of the many games and relaxing activities on site.
