Cupertino Announces 2023 CREST Awards Winners
The City of Cupertino is proud to announce the winners of the 2023 CREST Awards. Each year, the City of Cupertino presents its CREST Awards, “Cupertino Recognizes Extra Steps Taken,” to honor the outstanding contributions of Cupertino community members.

The community is invited to celebrate and honor this year's award winners at the annual CREST Awards Ceremony. This year’s CREST Awards will be held at Cupertino Community Hall on Thursday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m.
CREST Awards nominations are accepted year-round, and the online nomination form makes it easier and more convenient for the public to nominate a candidate. To nominate a community member and for more information on CREST Awards, visit cupertino.org/crest.
Public Relations and Strategic Communications RFP
On April 7, the City released a Request for Proposals (RFP) to facilitate the selection of a qualified firm to provide strategic communications consulting, graphic design services, marketing, and general communications support to the City. The overarching goal is to promote Cupertino's business value proposition to key audiences while focusing on top priorities. This project will lead to the City being able to amplify its digital and traditional media profile to market the City and boost business and investment attraction efforts. City Receives $3.2M for Traffic Safety Improvements
The City's Transportation Division of the Public Works Department has been awarded a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Grant in the amount of $3,205,620. This grant will be used to make safety improvements along 15 roadway corridors within the City of Cupertino.
These corridors include segments of:
The safety improvements include striping enhancements, high friction surface treatments, and radar speed feedback signs. These improvements are intended to reduce unsafe speed violations and rear-end collisions along the corridors. The grant funding covers 90% of the estimated total project cost of $3.56 million. Improvements are expected to be begin in 2025.
Cupertino's ARTour Recognized at Smart 50 Awards
The City of Cupertino is proud to announce that the City has been recognized at the 7th Annual Smart 50 Awards for implementing Cupertino’s first augmented reality (AR) application ARTour.
Out of hundreds of entries from cities around the world, Cupertino’s ARTour application has been chosen as one of the top 50 transformative smart projects. The Smart 50 awards recognize the most innovative and impactful city projects and initiatives from around the world, and Cupertino has joined the ranks of other leading cities, including Dallas, Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Germany, and Shenzhen, China.

Summer Volunteer Program: Leaders in Training
Applications for the City's summer volunteer program, Leaders in Training, are open! The City's Leaders in Training program is designed for teens aged 14 to 18 to learn valuable life skills. Leaders in Training are invaluable Parks and Recreation summer team members as they support our recreation leaders and are trained in supervision, safety, problem-solving, and leading camp activities.

Notable City Events
<hack> Cupertino Returns In Person
<hack> Cupertino is back this weekend in-person for the first time since 2019. This year's overnight hackathon will be at the Quinlan Community Center from Saturday, April 15 to Sunday, April 16. This 13-hour overnight hackathon for 13 to 18-year-olds prompts teams to solve a secret problem for the City. Teams will have the night to create a solution to the problem.
This event is an excellent opportunity for teens to destress, socialize, and flex their coding skills. Last call to register is this week to participate in this year's hackathon. You don't want to miss this event! To register, visit cupertino.org/hackcupertino.
Cupertino Earth and Arbor Day Festival is April 22
On Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Cupertino Library Park Field will be alive with energy as thousands of community members gather to celebrate our planet at Cupertino’s Earth and Arbor Day Festival. The event will go on rain or shine.
At Cupertino’s Earth and Arbor Day Festival, we celebrate our planet and our trees by coming together as a community. Find resources, activities, and conversation to inspire residents, businesses, and community members to take action to reduce their own impact on our planet.
This festival features more than 75 booths hosted by local non-profits and businesses, hands-on activities, live entertainment, a family tour through Regnart Creek Trail, and so much more.
Earth and Arbor Day Festival honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. Our community is committed to protect our planet from climate change and maintain the health of our people, animals, and natural environment.

Senior Center Volunteer Recognition Lunch
On Saturday, March 25, the Cupertino Senior Center hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition Lunch, which honors the work of more than 155 active volunteers. This year's event was held in person for the first time since 2019 and themed, "Our Volunteers are Out of this World."
Volunteer contributions include teaching, leading socials, performing in the community, preparing meals, fundraising for the center, and more. Councilmembers and Parks and Recreation Commissioners celebrated our amazing volunteers and more than 13,500 hours of volunteering this past year.
Partnering with the City to host the event was the Kiwanis Club of De Anza, who donated and prepared the lunch, marking 40 years of this partnership. In addition, Key Club members from Cupertino and Monta Vista High Schools came and assisted in serving the lunch to the honored guests.
Summer Job Fair and Window Decorating Recap
On Saturday, March 25 the Parks and Recreation Department hosted a Summer Job Fair for part-time summer staff and volunteers. Staff was on hand to promote job opportunities for Recreation Leaders, Lifeguards, and Building Attendants, as well as volunteer opportunities through the City's Leaders in Training program.

Teen Commission also hosted the City's first 'Spring Window Decorating,' which highlighted local youth-led organizations. The Wildfire Awareness Initiative Organization, Fremont Animation Club, Cupertino Teen Commission, and Youth Activity Board set the tone for spring with amazing window art! In addition to the window painting, the teen organization Health Connect ran a spike ball tournament for teens attending the event. |

It was a beautiful, sunny day which gave the opportunity for teens in the community to come and learn more about summer jobs, volunteer opportunities, and what Cupertino Parks and Recreation is all about! |

Watershed Day at McClellan Ranch Preserve
The California Conservation Corps Watershed Stewards Program, in partnership with the City of Cupertino, AmeriCorps, Grassroots Ecology, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, and Friends of Stevens Creek, celebrated Watershed Day at Cupertino's McClellan Ranch Preserve on Sunday, March 26.
More than 119 volunteers participated in the event to remove invasive plants, and mulch different areas of the Preserve, which allows native plants to grow and enrich the ecosystem.

Volunteers also had the opportunity to visit educational stations to learn about the importance of preserving our local watershed and to learn about our local creeks and California ecology. Two staff from the Public Works Environmental Programs Division hosted an educational station with an interactive watershed model to share knowledge about the Stevens Creek Watershed, how to prevent pollution, and how to protect our local waterways. |

Big Bunny 5K and Kids Fun Run Recap
On Saturday, April 8 the City hosted its annual Big Bunny 5K and Kids Fun Run. More than 500 participants were met with perfect running weather as they ran, walked, strolled, and hopped through the streets of Cupertino.

In addition, more than 100 little bunnies ran a lap or two around Library Field. All bunnies, big and small, received a t-shirt, race bib, participant medal, and bunny ears to wear during the race. |
