Revitalize Memorial Park

Join in the effort to revitalize Memorial Park! The City of Cupertino is developing a plan for Memorial Park to best meet the future recreation, gathering, event, and green space needs of the community and we need your feedback.

After hearing from the public in the fall of 2022, we have created three park concepts that blend important aspects of the park’s identity as a civic event space, community gathering space, and natural site and park. Now, we want to hear your thoughts about each concept to help shape the Memorial Park experience for the future.

Take the Park Concepts Online Survey (open through February 22), visit our Community Open House on February 4, or attend our upcoming webinar on February 9, and let us know what design you like best.

Celebrate Earth and Arbor Day in Cupertino

You are invited to celebrate our shared community and home at the City of Cupertino’s 15th annual Earth and Arbor Day Festival happening on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cupertino Library Field.

During this event, we hope to harness and build upon an exciting year for climate and environmental advocacy, policy, and action here in Silicon Valley and across the world, and we are seeking your participation for a successful festival.

Businesses and organizations can showcase their contributions to the health and sustainability of our community as tabling partners or event sponsors. Volunteers can cultivate awareness of environmental problems and solutions, inspire others to take action, and support a sustainable, healthy, and resilient community.

Coat Collection Drive a Success

From November 28 to December 23, 2022, the City's Environmental Programs Division and Recology teamed up with the Cupertino Library to collect used jackets for a Sharing the Warmth coat drive. There were 260 coats collected and donated to Sacred Heart Community Services to provide warmth to those in need.

Thank you to all the community members who shared the warmth this holiday season.

Notable City Events

Office of Emergency Management CERT Skills Day

On Saturday, January 21, the City's Office of Emergency Management and its Cupertino Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) held the first in-person skills day in three years at the Quinlan Community Center.

This year, more than 150 participants from all of Santa Clara County CERT programs practiced the skills from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) CERT training. It provided the opportunity for everyone to practice and work together in teams to prepare for disasters and emergencies.

CERT volunteers went to four different stations:

1. Incident Command System (ICS) - The management, operations, logistics, and planning needed to safely respond to emergencies.
2. Search and Rescue - Assessing neighborhoods, mitigating hazards, and safely helping residents and moving them to safety.
3. Radio Operations - CERT teams communicate situation status, request additional resources, and coordinate with the City during a response.
4. Medical Operations – Neighborhood volunteers practice triage and First Aid until emergency medical services or fire department resources become available. A total of 39 scouts from Troops 582 and 479 served as patients with various mockup and simulated injuries. The scouts made it very realistic and were appreciated by the CERT teams.

Cupertino OEM offers free training for residents to be able to take care of themselves, their families, and neighborhoods after an emergency. Everyone has a role in an emergency!

2023 Cupertino Spelling Bee

On Saturday, January 21, the annual Cupertino Spelling Bee returned for 2nd through 5th graders in its fourth iteration.

The Cupertino Spelling Bee is a spelling contest organized by the Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department and the Cupertino Youth Activity Board. Comprised of a 2nd-3rd grade Bee and a 4th-5th grade Bee, over 35 students battled in a fierce competition to be the best speller. The 2nd and 3rd grade Bee had 57 intense rounds with ‘conference’ as the winning word, while the 4th and 5th grade Bee had 28 rounds with ‘ingenious’ being the winning word. This year’s Spelling Bee was moderated and judged by members of the Teen Commission and Youth Activity Board.

Thank you to all who participated in this year’s Spelling Bee, and we look forward to hosting this event again in 2024. A video production of both Bees will be uploaded to the City's YouTube channel in the coming weeks.

City Communications Regarding COVID-19

Cupertino City Hall reopened to the public on Monday, April 11. City services offered in-person include Building, Business License, Finance, Planning, Public Works, and other services. Many virtual tools and online assistance remain available at cupertino.org/online-services.
