Via Shuttle Service Area Expansion Coming Soon!
Via-Cupertino is a convenient app-based ride-share program that has been providing shuttle service throughout Cupertino and select destinations outside of the City since 2019. Thanks to a generous grant from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), the City of Cupertino is partnering with the City of Santa Clara to expand and provide seamless service throughout both cities using electric vehicles! This expanded service area means students who live in Santa Clara and go to Hyde Middle School or Cupertino High School will be able to take the shuttle to school! The grant will also allow for the addition of two important stops in Mountain View to the service area: the Mountain View Caltrain Station and El Camino Hospital.
The expanded service (Phase I) is anticipated to begin in April 2023 and the grant will allow for 5 additional years of service. Phase II is anticipated to launch in 2026 (funding permitting).

Proposed New Bike Parking Locations in Cupertino
A bicycle network isn’t complete without secure, convenient bike parking at the end of a trip. Cupertino is developing a comprehensive Bicycle Facilities Improvement Plan as approved in the Fiscal Year 2022-23 City Council Work Program.
The first part of this project is to install new bike parking at popular destinations like parks and shops, where there is a need and adequate right of way. The Bicycle Pedestrian Commission (BPC) reviewed proposed bike rack locations (see image above) during the October BPC Meeting. City Staff has incorporated input from the Commission and the public into the proposed locations, which they will present at the next BPC meeting (likely in December).
The second part of this project is to review and, if necessary, update the City's existing parking ordinance (code 19.124) relating to the quantity and type of bicycle parking required to be installed by new developments.
If there are any locations around town that you feel need bicycle parking, you are welcome to provide input at the next Bicycle Pedestrian Commission Meeting. For meeting information, check the BPC website at the link below.

Cupertino held a community meeting on November 10 as part of its Lawson Bikeway Feasibility Study. The goal of the study is to develop a bikeway (bike lane or bike path) at Lawson Middle School to provide students safe access to the bike cages on campus.
Approximately 25 people attended the meeting and had the opportunity to hear a brief presentation about the study. Afterwards there was a lively discussion where attendees provided feedback to the project team regarding existing conditions and various issues that will be important to consider during the study.
Next Steps: consultants will conduct a staff-level stakeholder meeting followed by two more public meetings, and will present the study to the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission and City Council.
As upcoming meeting dates are set, we will announce them both in the monthly Safe Routes to School Newsletter and on the project website:

If someone in your family receives a bike or bike gear this holiday season, be sure to remove all tags and wrapping before using! Most importantly, make sure wheels move freely and nothing interferes with the brakes.

Regnart Creek Trail Opening Soon!
|
|
The long-anticipated Regnart Creek Trail is due to open soon! The trail itself is complete. Contractors are installing the last of three stages of privacy fencing where neighboring properties abut the creek trail. Once the fencing is all installed, the City will install roadway crossings at Blaney Avenue and East Estates Drive. Weather permitting, work is expected to be complete by early 2023. |
