Kicks Off with First Public Meeting
Thursday, November 10, 2022 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lawson Middle School, Room 29 10401 Vista Drive, Cupertino
The City of Cupertino is conducting a feasibility study for a bikeway (bike lane or bike path) at Lawson Middle School to provide students safe access to the bike cages on campus.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear a brief presentation about the feasibility study purpose and need, and provide feedback to City staff and the project team to assist in charting the path forward in study development.
Future steps: consultants will conduct two more public meetings, a stakeholder meeting, and will bring the study to the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission and City Council for input.
If you have any questions or comments about this project, please contact project manager Cherie Walkowiak at cheriew@cupertino.org at (408) 777-7609

Ride Out the Drought
|
|
We’re in the middle of a severe drought. What can you do to help? How about ride a bike?
Starting October 15th, Valley Water and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) are teaming up to create an education and awareness campaign called Ride Out the Drought, (#ROtD). Those who sign up will have access to lots of different safe bike routes through the Ride with GPS app that take you on a tour of different water features.
Along the routes there will be places to stop where you can click through Ride with GPS to learn more about water-wise landscaping, the role of percolation ponds, the importance of reservoirs and more.
The end goal is that you get a fun bike ride AND you pedal home inspired to take action to minimize your personal water use so we all can do our part to conserve this precious finite resource!
SVBC and Valley Water are encouraging everyone to register and ride along the self-guided routes at your convenience. The campaign will run through November 12th and there are routes for every type of rider:
-
If you’re a weekend warrior, there are routes with hills and lots of miles.
-
If you’re a parent looking for a free, fun activity for the kids, there are rides for you, too.
-
If you’re a city dweller, there is something with an urban flare.
Prizes will be given out on a weekly basis to anyone who has at least one ride under their belt.
Find more here about how you can ride out the drought, win prizes, and learn to curb your water usage.
P.S… SVBC needs volunteers. Sign up here if you’re interested.
Elementary School Poster Contest
Rethink Your Ride
The Mineta Transportation Institute is hosting a transportation-related poster contest. The contest allows students, grades 1-6, to demonstrate their knowledge of the year’s transportation theme, "Rethink Your Ride," through an artistic, visually compelling image.
If you know any elementary school students who would be interested in entering the contest, please pass this along to them!

Stay Safe and Visible as the Days Get Darker
|
|
Be Visible, Be Safe
When days darken earlier, make yourself visible when you walk or bike. Wear bright and reflective clothing to ensure that drivers see you at night.
|
Bike Light Laws
When biking in the dark, the law requires you to use a white front light and a red rear reflector. We also recommend attaching a red tail light to your bike. Extra lights like the ones above make you even more visible.

Safe Routes to School
High School Grants
We’re happy to announce that students from all three high schools in Cupertino submitted applications for the Safe Routes to School (SR2S) High School Grant program, and all applications have been approved. Students from each high school will use their $500 grant money to bring bicycle/pedestrian educational and/or encouragement programing to their schools this school year. The lineup of programs is impressive: everything from student transportation surveys to Don’t Drive for Donuts days, bike safety clinics, bike repair clinics, and group bike rides. Homestead High School already launched their program by holding a Bike Week with bike-related events every school day during the week of October 17 (see images below).
Cupertino is lucky to have such passionate students who are dedicated to increasing the number of students who walk and bike to their school.

Kennedy Separated Bikeway
What’s better than a bike lane? A bike lane separated from the road to keep cars from parking in it! The City installed bollards to do just this in front of Kenedy Middle School along Bubb Road, as pictured above. Two other spots have also recently received new bollards to separate the bike lanes from vehicles: Homestead Road in front of Homestead High, and along Mary Avenue leading to the Don Burnett Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge.

Orange Avenue Sidewalk Project
Orange Ave is across the street from Lincoln Elementary School and just down the street from Monta Vista High School. This perfectly-situated school route was not so perfect for students who wanted to walk to these two schools, due to the many missing sidewalk stretches, the dirt paths that would turn to mud in the rain, and the section or two that was actually barricaded from pedestrian use.
The City's 2018 Pedestrian Transportation Plan identified Orange Avenue as a street which needed sidewalk improvements so students could walk to school on dry ground, out of the street. This past spring, Cupertino Project Manager John Raymaakers launched the project after many years of neighborhood outreach and planning, with shovels hitting the dirt the day after school let out in June. He and his team completed the sidewalks along Orange Avenue and repaved the road in just 5 months. It is now officially fit for student travel.
