Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Pamela Wu who was recently appointed as Cupertino's new City Manager. Pamela brings more than 20 years of public sector experience to the City of Cupertino. She previously served as the City of San Bruno’s Community and Economic Development Director. In her role, she oversaw the Building, Planning, and Housing divisions. Prior to joining San Bruno, she worked at the City of Gilroy and the County of Santa Clara. Wu is a Lynbrook High School graduate who grew up in the Cupertino area and holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley. She is married with two grown children, who are both graduates of Fremont High School.
“The Cupertino City Council welcomes Pamela Wu as the City Manager of Cupertino with our unanimous support,” stated Mayor Darcy Paul. “As a community, we have done much work to ensure greater accountability to the public as well as to deliver services that are both more effective and more equitable, and I know that we will continue down this optimistic path with a great City Manager.”

Help enhance the business environment in Cupertino by serving on the new Economic Development Committee (EDC)! Recruitment for committee members is now open and industry representatives from Technology, Retail, Hospitality, Education, and Commercial Real Estate sectors are encouraged to apply.
The newly codified EDC will work to market the City in a positive way to attract and retain businesses, foster public and private partnerships through new and existing business and community relationships, collaborate with local businesses to identify and eliminate any barriers to retention or growth, and advise City Council on economic development goals that maintain the quality of life in Cupertino.
The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Click HERE to learn more and submit an application. Interviews and appointments are expected to take place in late November. The new Committee will begin meeting quarterly in early 2023.

Local Cupertino business owner, Shelkie Tao of Water Efficient Gardens, was featured on the Nasdaq tower at Time Square in September as a business that supports United Nation's "Sustainable City" Development Goal. Water Efficient Gardens has been delivering excellent native and drought tolerant landscape designs locally in the Bay Area, helping homeowners and businesses reserve resources and combat the historical California drought. Saving water is critical for the Cupertino community and a commendable mission undertaken by Water Efficient Gardens, aligning with the City’s Climate Action Plan and sustainability goals. We are proud of our local businesses such as Water Efficient Gardens that are making a difference in our community and beyond!

Congratulations to Cupertino Business, Pineapple Thai for being recognized as Assembly District 28's 2022 Small Business of the Year! On October 4th, Assembly member Even Low presented the award to the restaurant, celebrating the business’s path to success since opening in March 2020. Founded by Thalia and Raffy Swangchaeng, Pineapple Thai brings authentic Thai cuisine to Cupertino with unique flavors and dishes. The business has been an excellent community member and partner by supporting frontline workers during COVID-19, advocating for their employees, and supporting Cupertino-based events and organizations through donations and sponsorships. They consistently support Cupertino and all of its residents, while sharing their rich culture and food with the community. We are proud of their contributions, and so happy they call Cupertino home!

On September 22nd, City's Economic Development Division organized a ribbon cutting ceremony for one of the newest coffee shops in Cupertino – Nirvana Soul – who expanded their operations and recently opened the highly-anticipated location in Cupertino. The beloved coffee shop has been charming their customers with cheery interiors as well as eclectic coffee and baked goods. Owners, Jeronica and Be’Anka shared that they “love the Cupertino community and are thankful for everyone’s support”. Take a break from your busy day and visit Nirvana Soul at their Cupertino location at 19700 Vallco Pkwy.

We are excited to welcome new businesses that have recently opened their doors in our community.
Earthy Ruby - a holistic wellness practice combining traditional Chinese medicine and modern innovations in total healing, massage therapy, and organic skin care, celebrated their ribbon cutting ceremony on August 26th.
DHL also organized a Ribbon cutting event on September 8th celebrating the Express Servicepoint branch that opened in Cupertino and held a meet and greet with IndyCar driver, Romain Grosjean!

The City of Cupertino is excited to be the first city in Silicon Valley to partner with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Prospect Silicon Valley to help accelerate commercial building retrofits and raise awareness about cost-saving energy upgrades. The new approach called Integrated Systems Packages (ISP) bundles every day lighting/HVAC upgrades to save even more energy and money. Each ISP includes a set of efficiency measures that arcommercially proven and amenable to standardization. More about ISPs at American Inst. of Architects (AIA).

Starting January 1, 2023 minimum wage in Cupertino will be increasing to $17.20/hour. The change will cover employees performing two or more hours of work per week in Cupertino. Employees are entitled to these rights regardless of their immigration status. All employers located within Cupertino are mandated to post the official notice in the workplace informing employees of the rate and their rights. Businesses must also document all hours worked and keep records for four years. More information HERE.

Cupertino's Climate Action Plan 2.0 was adopted by City Council on August 16, 2022. The plan describes a series of measures and actions that will help the City to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet our community goals. The goals include achieving carbon neutrality in City-owned facilities and operations no later than 2030 and community-wide carbon neutrality before 2040. The plan is broken into chapters and includes topics like energy, transportation, waste, water, biodiversity, and natural systems.

The new leaf blower regulations will go into effect on Sunday, November 6, 2022. These regulations aim to improve quality of life by limiting noise disturbances for all properties, including commercial and office developments. Property owners and managers are responsible for ensuring compliance on their property regardless of who is using the leaf blower. For more information, click HERE.
