Housing Element Update
The City of Cupertino continues preparing the 6th Cycle Housing Element Update, which covers the planning period of 2023 to 2031. The Housing Element is part of Cupertino's General Plan and identifies policies and programs intended to meet the housing needs of the City's current and future residents at all income levels.
The Community Engagement Plan - Strategic Advisory Committee met on Monday, June 6 and discussed the format for upcoming community meetings that will be held in mid-July and early-August. The Committee’s discussion focused on ensuring that the City’s community engagement efforts include reaching out to all members of the Cupertino community.
The next Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Monday, June 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The following week, a Planning Commission Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28 at 6:45 p.m. The Planning Commission meeting will focus on selecting properties to be included on the Housing Element sites inventory, a key component of the Housing Element Update. Details on these meetings will be sent through enotifications and will be available soon at engagecupertino.org/housingelement.
City staff efforts to engage and inform the community about the Housing Element will continue through the summer months, and will include staff attending the local farmers market and holding two community meetings similar in format to the community meeting held at Community Hall on May 23rd.
Comments and input from the community are vital to achieve a successful Housing Element Update, and participation in the community engagement process is strongly encouraged. Climate Action Plan 2.0 to be Presented to the City Council for Study Session on June 21
The Climate Action Plan (CAP) 2.0 is a major update to the City’s sustainability strategy. It contains actions to keep moving towards clean energy, increase the safety and convenience of active and alternative transportation, reduce waste, conserve water, and adapt Cupertino to a changing climate.
On May 26, the Sustainability Commission reviewed the draft plan and received feedback from the public. After a discussion about ways to improve upon the draft, the Commission made a formal recommendation to move the plan to City Council for consideration.
A City Council Study Session is scheduled for Tuesday, June 21 at 5:30 p.m. This will be another opportunity for the public and Council to discuss how the CAP 2.0 keeps Cupertino in the lead on the environment.
Stay updated, leave a comment, and find more information about how to attend the Study Session at cupertino.org/climateaction.
Help the City Reimagine an All-Inclusive Playground at Jollyman Park
Get involved by giving your input on the new, reimagined playground at Jollyman Park. The project will replace the existing outdated play equipment with a new all-inclusive playground designed to be a place for everyone to come together.
The design will support recreation and social interaction for people with autism, sensory challenges, cognitive, developmental, physical disabilities, and those without special needs. Here, everyone will be able to participate in all sorts of play, community gatherings, and intergenerational experiences. The City's primary goal is to have a space for people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and orientations to connect, create, and strengthen our vital community.
We want to hear from you! There are four ways to provide feedback on the design concepts. These opportunities will allow you to review the play area and park features, share your feedback, and help determine the final design for the playground.
- Take the second online survey from June 14 to July 14 (will be available at engagecupertino.org/jollyman).
- Drop in and share your ideas at the Cupertino Library on June 18 between 10 a.m. and noon.
- Join us at Jollyman Park on June 25 from 10 a.m. to noon to give your feedback.
- Join us for a virtual community meeting on June 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The community's input will be used to develop the final design. To learn more about the project, visit engagecupertino.org/jollyman.
Input on Proposed Park at Lawrence-Mitty Site
The City has received valuable input from the community on the initial phase of the design for a planned park at the Lawrence-Mitty site. Community members gave input via the following forums:
- Engage Cupertino website: engagecupertino.org/lawrencemitty
- Online survey (563 responses)
- Two community-based pop-up events
- Big Bunny 5K on April 16 (approximately 30 participants)
- Youth Soccer League at Creekside Park on May 7 (approximately 30 participants)
- Virtual community meeting on April 27 (approximately 15 participants)
- Lawrence-Mitty Site Tour on April 30 (approximately 60 participants)
The online survey was available from March 30 through May 23. The City received 563 survey responses in addition to feedback from citizens who attended the in-person community meeting, pop-up events, and site tour.
Many ideas about design elements, as well as community concerns regarding site conditions, have been expressed throughout the preliminary phases of the project. The next steps are to analyze and summarize the data received from the community and present these findings to the City joint commission and City Council. The City will then work to create three alternative concept designs that reflect the common themes from the community's feedback. The City will return to the community once again for input on those three concept designs.
